New York State Police investigate fatal motorcycle crash in the town of Ohio that leaves 21-year-old rider dead
Ohio, New York – New York State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Tuesday morning, August 18, on State Route 8 in the town of Ohio.
According to police, troopers from SP Herkimer responded to the area at approximately 9:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a serious motorcycle crash. The preliminary investigation found that a 21-year-old man from Wolcott, New York, was traveling north on State Route 8 while operating a 2026 Yamaha motorcycle.
Police said the motorcyclist was traveling through a right-hand curve when he failed to negotiate the turn. The motorcycle crossed into the southbound lane, where it collided with a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer.
The tractor-trailer was being driven by James E. Day, 47, of Ontario, Canada. The collision caused the motorcycle to leave the roadway. It then struck a tree.
The motorcycle operator suffered fatal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to New York State Police. His name has not been released in the information provided by police.
Investigators also examined whether impairment played a role in the crash. A Drug Recognition Expert responded to the scene and determined that the tractor-trailer driver was not impaired.
The crash brought additional resources to the area as investigators worked to determine exactly what happened. The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, known as the CRU, responded to assist with the investigation.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. Police have not indicated that any charges have been filed in connection with the collision.
State Route 8 was the focus of the investigation as authorities worked to document the roadway, the vehicles involved and the events leading up to the fatal collision.
New York State Police said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may be released as investigators continue their work.
