New York – New York State Police are offering parents and caregivers an opportunity to have their child passenger car seats checked for free during the Delaware County Fair this week.

The inspections are being held throughout the fair, giving families a chance to have their seats examined by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. The service is intended to help make sure car seats are installed correctly and that children are traveling as safely as possible.

The free checks are available from Monday, August 17, through Saturday, August 22, at the Delaware County Fairgrounds, located at 12 Fair Street in Walton, New York. Certified technicians will be available each day from noon until 7 p.m.

For families who are unsure whether a car seat has been installed properly, the inspection can provide useful guidance. Technicians will inspect the seat, check its installation and answer questions from parents and caregivers.

They can also offer advice on proper use and help families understand whether adjustments are needed. The goal is not simply to look at the car seat, but to give parents greater confidence that their child is properly secured while traveling.

New York State Police said no appointment is required for the inspections. However, appointments are encouraged and can be arranged by calling Troop C Traffic at (607) 561-7400.

Families planning to have a seat inspected are encouraged to bring the child who uses the seat, if possible. Bringing both the car seat manual and the vehicle owner’s manual is also recommended. Parents should allow enough time for the inspection rather than expecting a quick stop.

The reminders are particularly important because proper installation can depend on both the design of the car seat and the vehicle in which it is being used. Having the manuals available can help technicians provide more specific guidance.

The inspection program is part of the New York State Police effort to promote child passenger safety and help parents avoid common problems with car seat installation and use. Even when a seat appears to be securely installed, a professional inspection can identify issues that may not be obvious.

Proper car seat use can significantly reduce the risk of injury in a crash, according to the New York State Police. The agency is encouraging parents and caregivers to use the free service while it is available at the fair.

The Delaware County Fair provides a convenient setting for the inspections because families can stop by while attending the event. The service will remain available throughout the fair’s scheduled dates, from noon to 7 p.m. each day.

Parents who have questions about the inspection or would like to arrange an appointment can call (607) 561-7400 and ask for Traffic.

With certified technicians on-site for the week, police are encouraging families not to overlook the opportunity. A few minutes spent checking a child’s car seat can help ensure that the seat is being used and installed as intended and give caregivers additional peace of mind on the road.
