Rochester City School District coaches earn top honors in Section V Awards

Rochester, New York – Two dedicated coaches from the Rochester City School District (RCSD) have been recognized for their outstanding leadership and contributions to high school athletics. Wille Mason, boys varsity basketball coach at World of Inquiry School No. 58, and Maurice Jones, girls varsity basketball coach at East High School, have both been named Section V Coaches of the Year in their respective classes.

Mason, who has led the World of Inquiry boys basketball team to an impressive 17–3 record, was honored as the Class B1 Coach of the Year. Under his leadership, the team has secured the top spot in its division and is now preparing for a deep playoff run. Their next game will take place on Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at World of Inquiry, where they will face the winner of the Livonia vs. Wayland–Cohocton matchup.

Beyond basketball, Mason has been a crucial figure in RCSD for nearly a decade. He currently serves as the lead school safety officer at Andrew Langston Middle School and also coaches boys volleyball at School of the Arts. Additionally, he is an assistant baseball coach at Padilla High School, part of the Franklin campus. His commitment to both academics and athletics has made him a respected leader in the district.

Jones, who has also been with RCSD for nine years, was named the Class A Coach of the Year after guiding the East High girls basketball team to a 16–4 record. The team is ranked first in Class A and will begin their sectional journey on Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. As a special education teacher at East High School, Jones plays a key role in supporting students both on and off the court. In addition to coaching basketball, he also leads the girls’ modified volleyball team at East.

The achievements of Mason and Jones reflect their dedication, hard work, and ability to inspire student-athletes. Their recognition by Section V is a testament to their impact on their teams and the broader school community.
