Monroe Community Hospital celebrates the opening of Friendship Place with a new 25-bed neighborhood focused on compassionate memory care

Rochester, New York – Monroe Community Hospital has opened a new memory care neighborhood designed to give people living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other cognitive impairments a safer, more comfortable and more supportive place to live.

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and Monroe Community Hospital Executive Health Director Alyssa Tallo recently celebrated the opening of Friendship Place, a newly renovated 25-bed memory care unit covering about 17,000 square feet. The project is intended to improve the daily experience of residents while also providing support for their families and caregivers.

The new neighborhood represents a major step in Monroe Community Hospital’s effort to provide person-centered care in an environment built around the needs of people with memory-related conditions. Rather than relying only on traditional medical care, the design of Friendship Place focuses on comfort, independence, dignity and safety.

“Anyone who has a loved one living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia knows the challenges that come with providing safe, comfortable, high-quality care,” said County Executive Adam Bello. “But now with the opening of Friendship Place, that’s the exact kind of care that we’ll be providing in Monroe County. Alongside the leadership team at Monroe Community Hospital, we have made it a priority to ensure our neighbors living with these diseases can live in a facility where they are not only treated with respect, but also in a space that feels like home.”

The project was not created overnight. Its development followed years of planning and cooperation, including support from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. A grant from the foundation allowed Monroe Community Hospital to work with internationally recognized experts in dementia care.

Their input helped shape both the physical surroundings and the education provided to hospital employees. The goal was to create a setting that responds to the way people with cognitive impairments experience their surroundings while giving staff the knowledge needed to provide specialized care.

“Friendship Place represents our vision for the future of dementia care,” said Alyssa Tallo, Executive Health Director of Monroe Community Hospital. “Every aspect of this neighborhood was intentionally designed to promote comfort, independence, dignity and safety while supporting the unique needs of residents and their families. Combined with our specialized staff training, Friendship Place creates an environment where residents can truly thrive.”

Several features throughout Friendship Place are intended to make the neighborhood easier and more pleasant for residents to navigate.

The unit uses biodynamic lighting designed to support natural circadian rhythms. The lighting is intended to encourage healthier sleep patterns and help improve mood. Colors and other design elements were also carefully selected to make it easier for residents to find their way around the space and maintain as much independence as possible.

Personal recognition is another important part of the design. Memory boxes are placed outside residents’ rooms, providing familiar information that can help people recognize their own personal space and maintain a sense of orientation.

The neighborhood also includes open gathering areas where residents can spend time together, socialize and take part in meaningful activities. These spaces are designed to feel welcoming rather than institutional, helping create a more familiar community atmosphere.

A state-of-the-art bathing suite is another part of the renovation. It was designed with the aim of making bathing a calmer and more comfortable experience. Friendship Place also includes additional private rooms, giving residents greater privacy and supporting their dignity.

Behind the scenes, the facility has been designed with residents’ comfort in mind as well. Staff work areas, supply storage and meal delivery systems are concealed where possible. This helps reduce unnecessary visual stimulation and allows common areas to maintain a more home-like appearance.

The neighborhood also includes design features that allow residents to move safely through the space. This approach is intended to preserve freedom of movement while reducing risks associated with wandering, which can be a concern for people living with dementia.

Outdoor access is part of the care environment as well. Residents can use Monroe Community Hospital’s enclosed patio and garden, giving them an opportunity to spend time outdoors, enjoy fresh air and participate in recreation in a protected setting.

The opening of Friendship Place adds another chapter to Monroe Community Hospital’s long history of serving people with complex needs. MCH traces its roots to 1826 and has spent nearly 200 years providing care to vulnerable members of the community.

Today, the county-owned facility provides a wide range of services, including long-term skilled nursing care, short-term rehabilitation, hospice, memory care and specialty care. With 566 licensed beds, Monroe Community Hospital is among the largest skilled nursing facilities in the nation.

For residents and their families, however, the significance of Friendship Place goes beyond the size of the renovation. The project reflects an effort to make memory care more personal and less institutional, with the physical surroundings, staff training and daily routines working together.

As Monroe Community Hospital continues its work in memory care, Friendship Place is intended to provide residents with an environment where safety does not have to come at the expense of independence, and where specialized care can be delivered in a setting designed to feel more like home.
