New online tracking tool helps residents follow yard debris pickup in real time across the community
Pittsford, New York – A quiet but meaningful shift is underway in how residents keep track of yard debris collection, as local officials introduce a new web-based tool designed to bring clarity—and a bit of predictability—to a routine task that often felt anything but predictable.
This season marks the debut of a revised collection system, one built around a continuous, rolling pickup schedule rather than the older, sector-based approach. Instead of assigning fixed days to specific neighborhoods, crews will now move steadily through the entire town each week. The goal is simple: reduce delays, improve efficiency, and keep things moving.
“This year our NEW rolling pickup for yard debris will make collection faster and more efficient. We’ll be picking up yard debris continuously, Monday through Wednesday or Thursday each week, depending on yard debris volume. During holiday weeks, we’ll collect on Fridays if needed. This represents a change from pickup on specific days for specific sectors of the Town.”
Although the structure has changed, the frequency has not. Residents can still expect weekly pickup, but with a smoother flow. Crews will work their way across neighborhoods early in the week, wrapping up by Thursday before restarting the route again the following Monday. The result, officials say, is a system that avoids bottlenecks and allows for quicker turnaround times.
To support this transition, the town has launched a new interactive tracking map—an online tool that offers near real-time updates on collection progress. Updated twice daily, the map gives residents a clearer sense of when trucks are approaching their street, reducing guesswork and last-minute scrambling.
Those who prefer a more traditional method can still call the Town Highway Department during regular business hours for updates. But the digital option is expected to become the go-to resource, especially for residents accustomed to checking services online.
Beyond convenience, the changes are also expected to have a broader impact on town operations. By dedicating full days to debris collection, crews can be scheduled more effectively for other critical work, including road repaving and infrastructure improvements. The ripple effect could mean faster completion of larger municipal projects.

Environmental benefits are also part of the equation. Fewer return trips to the highway garage mean less fuel consumption, reduced truck traffic, and lower wear on equipment. It’s a small but meaningful step toward more sustainable operations.
“Our new continuous pickup process allows Town crews to devote full days to collecting your yard debris. This, in turn, allows for better scheduling of Town employees for road repaving and other major projects. It’s also environmentally beneficial, as it means fewer trips back and forth to the highway garage, reducing truck traffic, fuel costs and wear and tear on equipment.”
For residents, the message is straightforward: same service, smarter system—and now, a digital window into how it all unfolds.
