Holiday generosity brings joy and surprises to every student at Abelard Reynolds School No. 42 during the festive season
Rochester, New York – As classrooms across Rochester settle into the rhythm of the holiday season, one school experienced something far beyond the usual December routine. This week, Abelard Reynolds School No. 42 became the center of a remarkable show of kindness, as every student in the building received a holiday gift thanks to an effort led by the Monroe County Federation of Social Workers.
What began as a typical school day quickly transformed into a scene filled with excitement and surprise. More than 400 students were called to receive presents tailored just for them, turning hallways and classrooms into spaces of laughter, wide eyes, and joyful chatter. Gifts ranged from bicycles and iPads to Barbie Dreamhouses, toys, and gift cards, ensuring that every child walked away with something meaningful.
The initiative was not a last-minute effort. Its roots trace back to last year, when the Federation’s Women’s Committee decided to give back to a Rochester city school during the holidays. After reaching out to several schools, the group connected with Principal Washington and formed a partnership with School No. 42. That first year, the project was modest in size, focusing on only three classrooms.
However, word of the effort spread quickly among Federation members. The response was immediate and overwhelming, with volunteers eager to help more students than originally planned. The enthusiasm revealed a clear desire to expand the initiative beyond its initial scope.
This year, the Federation returned with a bold goal: reaching every student in the school. To make that happen, students were invited to share two items they wished for during the holidays. From there, Federation members stepped in, organizing donations and coordinating purchases to meet those requests. In many cases, volunteers went beyond the lists, adding thoughtful extras to make each gift feel special.
The effort required coordination across many roles within the Federation. Social workers, administrators, case aides, and security staff all contributed, working together to ensure that no student was overlooked. The result was a carefully organized distribution that felt personal rather than routine, with each child receiving attention and care.
For students, the impact was immediate and visible. Smiles spread quickly as gifts were unwrapped, and teachers noted a buzz of excitement that carried throughout the building. For many children, the surprise added a sense of warmth and inclusion during a season that can be difficult for families facing financial challenges.
School staff expressed gratitude for the partnership, noting how rare it is for an entire student body to be included in a single holiday giving effort. The gesture reinforced a sense of community within the school and reminded students that people beyond their classrooms care deeply about their well-being.
Leaders from the Monroe County Federation of Social Workers said the experience was just as meaningful for those who gave. Deborah Jackson, speaking on behalf of the organization, said the goal was simple: to bring joy to children during the holidays. “We are so glad to be able to add some smiles and cheer to all the children at School No. 42,” Jackson said. “We were blessed to be able to do this, and we hope to be able to do more next year.”
As the holiday season continues, the experience at Abelard Reynolds School No. 42 stands as a reminder of what can happen when community members come together with a shared purpose. What started as a small gesture grew into an effort that touched every student, leaving behind more than gifts—creating memories, encouragement, and a lasting sense of care that will carry well beyond the holidays.
