New York – In a show of statewide unity and remembrance, New York landmarks are lighting up in red, white, and blue this evening, May 26, to honor those who gave their lives in military service. The tribute, directed by Governor Kathy Hochul, marks a solemn yet powerful gesture to recognize Memorial Day and the sacrifices made by American service members throughout the nation’s history.

“Every year on Memorial Day we remember those who have fallen and mourn the ultimate sacrifice they made to protect their fellow citizens,” Governor Hochul said in a statement announcing the illumination. “Their bravery and commitment to fight for and uphold our nation’s freedoms will never be forgotten — we will always be grateful for their service.”

From towering city structures to regional icons, 16 sites across New York will participate in the commemorative display. Among the most notable are One World Trade Center and the Empire State Plaza, both of which carry symbolic weight as centers of resilience and state pride.

The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and the Kosciuszko Bridge, essential connectors across the Hudson and Newtown Creek respectively, will also glow in the national colors. In Western New York, the iconic Niagara Falls will be lit in red, white, and blue, offering a breathtaking visual tribute seen by thousands.

Other participating sites include the Alfred E. Smith State Office Building and the H. Carl McCall SUNY Building in Albany, as well as the State Education Building and the Albany International Airport Gateway. From Long Island to the Adirondacks, the effort spans both urban and rural landscapes, symbolizing a united recognition of those who gave everything for their country.

Transportation hubs like Moynihan Train Hall and Grand Central Terminal’s Pershing Square Viaduct in New York City will join the observance, along with the MTA LIRR East End Gateway at Penn Station. Smaller yet significant landmarks, such as the Fairport Lift Bridge over the Erie Canal and the Lake Placid Olympic Center, are also part of the statewide lighting.
