Rochester, New York – A fourth-grade student at Abraham Lincoln School No. 22 in Rochester has received recognition for demonstrating courage, responsibility, and leadership while helping fellow students navigate difficult situations.

Quinci Granderson was honored with the “Do the Right Thing” Award on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in recognition of his maturity, integrity, and willingness to support classmates when they needed guidance.

The Rochester City School District highlighted Quinci’s actions as an example of how young students can make a meaningful difference by recognizing concerning situations and encouraging others to seek help from trusted adults.

Assistant Principal Michele White nominated Quinci for the award following an incident that occurred last winter, when he was still in third grade.

According to the district, Quinci learned that a fellow student had received an inappropriate image on her cellphone. Rather than ignoring the situation, he recognized that the material was inappropriate and calmly encouraged his classmate not to view the picture.

He also advised her to tell her mother immediately, helping ensure that a responsible adult became aware of the situation.

His response allowed the student’s mother to work with school staff to obtain advice and support. School officials recognized Quinci’s decision as an example of good judgment and the importance of speaking up when someone may need assistance.

However, the incident was not the only occasion when Quinci demonstrated concern for others.

His teacher, Ms. Key-Ward, described him as a student who is respected and well-liked by his classmates. Throughout the previous school year, Quinci also encouraged at least two other friends to discuss serious concerns with a parent or another trusted adult.

These actions demonstrated a consistent willingness to support his peers and promote responsible decision-making, rather than simply responding appropriately to one isolated incident.

The “Do the Right Thing” program seeks to strengthen relationships between the Rochester Police Department and young people throughout the community.

The initiative recognizes students who make positive choices, demonstrate academic commitment, contribute to their communities, or show meaningful improvements in their behavior.

By highlighting students such as Quinci, the program also draws attention to the importance of positive peer influence and the role young people can play in creating supportive school environments.

The Rochester City School District and the School No. 22 community celebrated Quinci’s achievement, recognizing him as an example of leadership, compassion, and responsibility among elementary school students.
