Rochester to host public meeting on proposed Durand Eastman Park improvements and new Beach House design
Rochester, New York – Rochester residents will have another opportunity to weigh in on the future of Durand Eastman Park as city officials prepare to share the latest developments in a project aimed at improving beach access and recreational facilities along Lake Ontario.
The City of Rochester has scheduled a public meeting for Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Kusak Lodge at Camp Eastman. The gathering will focus on updates to the Durand Eastman Park Master Plan and the proposed design of a permanent Beach House.
Residents attending the meeting will be able to review the progress made so far, learn more about the planned improvements, and offer suggestions before the next stages of the project move forward.
The two parts of the project are currently at different stages. While the updated Master Plan is approaching completion, the Beach House design remains in its early development phase. That leaves room for additional public feedback as officials and designers continue working through the details.
One of the project’s main goals is to establish a permanent Beach House facility that would support public swimming access to Lake Ontario.
The City is working with a consultant team on the proposed facility, which would also help Rochester move away from its current conditional permit for beach operations. A permanent facility is intended to provide a more lasting arrangement for public beach access.
But the work extends beyond the Beach House itself.
The updated Master Plan takes a broader look at the entire stretch of beach and the surrounding areas. It includes potential improvements to parking facilities, pedestrian access, picnic spaces, recreational areas, and other amenities used by park visitors.
The planning process will also consider additional programming opportunities that could expand how residents and visitors use the park.
These improvements are being examined as part of a larger effort to guide future development throughout the beach area rather than focusing on individual facilities alone.
Community participation has played a significant role in shaping the plans.
Before this upcoming meeting, the City gathered feedback through surveys, public meetings, and engagement sessions held directly at the park. Those efforts gave residents opportunities to share their experiences and identify what they would like to see improved.
The Oct. 20 meeting will continue that process, allowing community members to examine the latest designs and provide additional comments while planning is still underway.
City officials are encouraging residents to attend, particularly those interested in the future of public swimming, beach facilities, and recreational opportunities at Durand Eastman Park.
With the Master Plan nearing completion and the Beach House design still preliminary, the meeting offers residents a chance to have their voices heard before the project advances further.
