Portion of Schlegel Road to close Monday for Monroe County culvert replacement project

Webster, New York – A section of Schlegel Road will close to all traffic beginning Monday, September 21, as Monroe County starts a project to replace a culvert over a tributary of Fourmile Creek.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. The work area is located about one-quarter mile west of Basket Road, where the existing culvert will be removed and replaced as part of a Monroe County Department of Transportation project.

C.P. Ward, a contractor working for the Monroe County DOT, will carry out the construction. The closure is needed to allow crews to safely remove the current structure and install a new one.

Drivers who normally use Schlegel Road through the affected area will need to follow a posted detour. The designated route will take motorists along Salt Road, Woodard Road and Basket Road before reconnecting with Schlegel Road.

The road will not be completely inaccessible to nearby residents. Local traffic will continue to be allowed to reach driveways and Pipeline Way up to the construction area. However, vehicles will not be able to cross the culvert itself while the work is underway.

The project involves more than simply replacing the structure beneath the road. Crews will first remove the existing culvert along with the asphalt surrounding it. That structure will then be replaced with a new precast box culvert.

Work will also include changes to the watermain in the area. The watermain will be replaced and routed around the new culvert as part of the construction.

Once the main structural work is finished, crews will widen the asphalt shoulders near the culvert. Pavement markings will also be replaced before the road is reopened to traffic.

County officials expect the work to continue for several weeks. Barring unexpected problems or other delays, the project is expected to be completed in November 2026.

The temporary closure is likely to affect drivers who use Schlegel Road as a through route, particularly those traveling between the surrounding roads near Basket Road. Motorists should watch for posted detour signs and allow additional time for their trips while the culvert is closed.

Residents living near the construction area will still have access to their properties, with local traffic maintained to the available driveways and Pipeline Way on the side of the closure.

The culvert replacement is part of Monroe County’s ongoing transportation and infrastructure work. Replacing the aging structure will also give crews an opportunity to address the nearby watermain, road shoulders and pavement markings during the same project.
