Portion of Schlegel Road to close September 21 as Monroe County begins major culvert replacement project

Webster, New York – A portion of Schlegel Road will be closed to all traffic beginning Monday, September 21, as Monroe County officials move forward with a project to replace a culvert over Fourmile Creek Tributary.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. and will affect the Schlegel Road crossing located approximately one-quarter mile west of Basket Road. The work is being carried out by C.P. Ward, a contractor working for the Monroe County Department of Transportation.

Although the culvert will be closed, residents and other local traffic will still be able to reach properties along the affected section of Schlegel Road. Access will be maintained to all driveways and to Pipeline Way up to the culvert. The crossing itself, however, will not be open to vehicles while construction is underway.

Drivers who normally use Schlegel Road as a through route will need to take a posted detour. The designated route will direct traffic along Salt Road, Woodard Road and Basket Road. Signs will be placed along the route to help motorists navigate around the construction area.

The project is more than a simple repair. Crews will completely remove the existing culvert, along with the asphalt surrounding the structure. Once the old structure is gone, a new precast box culvert will be installed in its place.

Other work will take place around the crossing as part of the same project. A watermain will be replaced and rerouted around the new culvert, while the asphalt shoulders near the crossing will be widened. Pavement markings will also be replaced before the road is reopened.

The construction schedule is expected to keep the road crossing closed for several weeks. If there are no unforeseen delays or other complications, Monroe County expects the project to be finished in November 2026.

The closure is part of the county’s ongoing transportation and infrastructure work, with the culvert replacement designed to provide a new structure at the Fourmile Creek Tributary crossing.

For people who live near Schlegel Road, the most immediate change will be the loss of access across the culvert during construction. Local access will remain available on both sides of the closure, but motorists who need to continue through the area will have to use the posted detour.
