Oswego County, New York – A 17-year-old motorcyclist died after a single-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Oswego County, according to the New York State Police, who continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The crash happened on July 11 in the town of Mexico. Troopers assigned to the State Police barracks in Hastings were called to the scene at about 2:14 p.m. following reports of a motorcycle crash along State Route 3 near the intersection with Munger Hill Road.

Based on the initial investigation, authorities believe the rider was traveling south when he attempted to pass another vehicle. Shortly afterward, the motorcycle entered a curve that the rider was unable to navigate successfully. Investigators said the motorcycle veered off the roadway, crashed into a tree, and threw the rider from the bike.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and found the operator with critical injuries. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital for emergency medical treatment, but despite those efforts, he later died from his injuries.

State Police identified the rider as Dalton J. Cummins, 17, of Mexico.

At this stage of the investigation, officials have described the incident as a single-motorcycle crash. No additional vehicles were reported to have been involved in the collision, although investigators noted that the rider had attempted to pass another vehicle moments before losing control.

Authorities have not released further details regarding possible contributing factors, and it remains unclear whether speed, road conditions, or other circumstances played a role in the crash. Investigators are continuing to examine the evidence gathered at the scene as they work to determine the full sequence of events.

State Police said the investigation remains active, and additional information may be released as it becomes available. Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact investigators as they continue to review the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
