RIT earns strong praise from accreditation review team following extensive campus evaluation visit
Rochester, New York – Rochester Institute of Technology appears to be moving confidently toward another successful reaccreditation cycle after receiving encouraging feedback from a recent campus review conducted by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
The university, widely known as RIT, welcomed an eight-member evaluation team selected by MSCHE for a multi-day visit held from March 29 through April 1. During the review, evaluators examined the institution’s extensive self-study report and met with university leadership, faculty members, staff, and other campus stakeholders to assess how the institution measures up against accreditation standards.
According to the team’s findings, RIT appears to satisfy all accreditation requirements and standards, a significant milestone in a process that universities across the country undergo to demonstrate educational quality, institutional effectiveness, and long-term sustainability.
The review painted a favorable picture of the university’s current direction and future ambitions. Evaluators described RIT as a “dynamic, forward-looking university” that combines strong academic programming with practical, career-oriented learning opportunities. The team highlighted the university’s emphasis on experiential education and interdisciplinary collaboration, noting that those elements remain central to RIT’s identity.
Particular attention was given to the university’s long-established cooperative education model, which allows students to gain hands-on industry experience while completing their studies. The evaluation also pointed to RIT’s international campuses and expanding research initiatives as examples of the institution’s growing global footprint and academic reach.
In a formal response following the site visit, RIT President Bill Sanders thanked the evaluation team for what he characterized as a collaborative and comprehensive review process. He stated that the findings reflected the university’s “culture, achievements, and aspirations.” University officials indicated that RIT accepted the report in full, including both recommendations and collegial guidance offered by the visiting team.
The reaccreditation process also included a close look at RIT’s recently introduced 2035 Strategic Framework, which outlines long-term institutional priorities. Evaluators found the framework to be closely aligned with the university’s mission and future direction. The plan focuses on several broad goals, including transformative student experiences, expanded research activity, community well-being, and increased global engagement.
The evaluation team additionally identified several operational strengths across the university. Among the most notable were RIT’s culture of ethics and integrity, the depth of its academic offerings, and a wide-ranging network of student support services designed to improve retention and student achievement.
Financial stability also emerged as a key point in the report. Evaluators noted that RIT continues to invest heavily in facilities, research infrastructure, and the development of new academic programs. Those investments are expected to support the institution’s long-term ambitions, including its pursuit of Carnegie R1 designation, a classification reserved for universities with very high levels of research activity.

Despite the overwhelmingly positive assessment, the review team also outlined several areas where additional refinement could strengthen the university further. Recommendations included improving how RIT tracks progress toward strategic objectives, enhancing assessment methods tied to student learning outcomes, and reviewing aspects of operational planning and resource allocation.
Those suggestions were framed as part of a broader effort to support continuous institutional improvement, particularly as RIT seeks to expand its doctoral offerings and research enterprise in the years ahead.
Importantly for the university, the evaluation team reported no concerns related to federal compliance or accreditation requirements. That finding effectively confirms the institution’s operational stability and its ability to maintain educational quality across its various academic programs and global locations.
“Taken together, the reaccreditation review underscores RIT’s position as a globally engaged, innovative university with a clear trajectory for the future,” said Chris Licata. “As RIT continues to build on its strengths, the Middle States process provides both validation of its progress and a roadmap for further advancement.”
The university now awaits final action from the commission, which is expected in June. While that formal decision still lies ahead, the tone and substance of the evaluation report suggest that RIT enters the final stretch of the reaccreditation process in a strong position.
For university leaders, faculty, and students alike, the outcome represents more than a routine institutional review. It serves as a broader endorsement of the university’s academic direction, research ambitions, and commitment to preparing students for an increasingly interconnected and rapidly evolving world.
