State Police arrest inmate accused of attacking correction officer during overnight incident at Livingston County prison
Rochester, New York – Authorities in western New York say an incarcerated man is facing multiple felony charges after investigators determined he assaulted a correction officer earlier this year inside a state prison facility.
According to officials, the investigation was conducted by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation assigned to SP Geneseo. The case centers on an alleged attack that occurred inside Groveland Correctional Facility, a state prison located in Livingston County.
The incident dates back to the early morning hours of February 3, 2025. Investigators say that at approximately 12:25 a.m., a correction officer was working at an officer’s station within the facility when the situation suddenly escalated.
Authorities allege that 31-year-old inmate Austin A. Miles approached the area and carried out the assault.
Investigators determined that Miles allegedly attempted to hide his identity before confronting the officer. According to the findings, the inmate reportedly jumped over the desk at the station and struck the correction officer during the encounter.
The attack left the officer with multiple injuries. Officials confirmed that the correction officer sustained visible wounds during the incident and was transported from the facility for medical evaluation and treatment. The extent of the injuries has not been publicly detailed, but authorities confirmed the officer required professional medical care following the assault.
After the incident, investigators began reviewing evidence to determine exactly what happened inside the correctional facility.
The inquiry involved several investigative steps. Detectives examined body-worn camera recordings and conducted interviews with individuals who were present or had relevant information about the event. The collected evidence, authorities said, helped identify the person responsible for the assault.
Investigators ultimately concluded that Miles was the individual involved in the attack.
Once the investigation was completed, the case was forwarded for legal review. Prosecutors with the Livingston County District Attorney’s Office evaluated the evidence gathered by investigators.
Following that review, a grand jury in Livingston County returned an indictment on March 4, 2026, formally charging Miles in connection with the alleged assault.
Weeks later, on March 24, 2026, Miles was transported to SP Geneseo, where law enforcement officials processed the charges related to the case.
Authorities said the inmate was processed without incident.
Miles now faces several serious felony charges stemming from the incident inside the prison. The charges include assault in the second degree for injuring a person while confined in a correctional facility, assault in the second degree with intent to cause injury to a police or peace officer, and assault on a peace officer, which is classified as a class C felony.
Following the processing of the charges, Miles was returned to the custody of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
Officials confirmed that he remains incarcerated and is expected to appear in Livingston County Court at a later date to face the charges connected to the case.
Authorities emphasized that multiple agencies worked together during the investigation. In addition to the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the case involved assistance from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision as well as the Livingston County District Attorney’s Office.
Investigations involving incidents inside correctional facilities often require coordination between prison officials and outside law enforcement agencies. Such cooperation allows authorities to review security footage, gather statements, and reconstruct the events that led to the alleged offense.
For now, the legal process will continue in court as prosecutors pursue the charges against Miles.
Officials have not released further details about the incident or the condition of the injured correction officer. The case will move forward through the judicial system in Livingston County in the coming months.
