Monroe County, New York – Monroe County is expanding how it serves older residents with the launch of a new program designed to bring connection, learning, and activity directly into people’s homes. County Executive Adam Bello announced the debut of the Virtual Senior Center, a free and interactive online program created for adults age 60 and older who want to stay socially and mentally engaged without leaving home.

The Virtual Senior Center, also known as VSC, is offered through the Monroe County Office for the Aging in partnership with the New York State Office for the Aging and is powered by enliveo. The program allows older adults to join live-streamed classes, take part in group activities, and connect one-on-one with instructors and peers using secure video technology. The goal is to help residents remain active, informed, and socially connected, regardless of physical limitations or transportation challenges.

“Monroe County older adults deserve opportunities to stay connected and engaged, regardless of mobility challenges or transportation barriers,” said County Executive Adam Bello. “The Virtual Senior Center expands access to exercise, wellness, arts, music, and lifelong learning—bringing the benefits of a senior center directly into people’s homes. Thank you to the New York State Office for the Aging and our local Office for the Aging for working together to break down barriers and help older adults thrive.”

Through the Virtual Senior Center, participants can choose from a broad lineup of live and interactive programming. Offerings include arts, culture, and language classes, fitness and exercise sessions, and discussions focused on history, news, and travel. Music and games provide opportunities for fun and social interaction, while science and nature programs offer educational enrichment. Wellness and livelihood support sessions focus on healthy living, and technology and training classes help participants become more confident using digital tools. The program also includes “Pets Together Virtual Visits,” which give participants a chance to enjoy virtual interactions with animals.

County officials say the program is especially important for older adults who may experience isolation. “We are so proud to offer this innovative opportunity to help reduce social isolation,” said Steve Newcomb, Director of Monroe County Office for the Aging. “VSC gives Monroe County residents the chance to make friends and share similar interests with people across New York State.”

The Virtual Senior Center is structured as a free membership program. To participate, residents need a home computer or laptop with a webcam and microphone, or a tablet or iPad, along with a reliable internet connection. For those who may feel unsure about technology, help is available. Staff from the Monroe County Office for the Aging can assist with enrollment and provide step-by-step guidance on how to log in, join sessions, and make the most of the available programs.

Another key feature of the Virtual Senior Center is its support for multiple languages. This ensures that older adults from diverse backgrounds across Monroe County can access programming in a way that feels comfortable and inclusive. County leaders say this approach reflects the community’s growing diversity and the need to offer services that reach as many residents as possible.

While the Virtual Senior Center offers a new way to participate, county officials emphasize that it does not replace traditional services. For residents who prefer face-to-face interaction, congregate meals and recreational activities continue to be offered at 20 senior centers throughout Monroe County. These in-person locations remain an important part of the county’s aging services network.

Older adults who want to enroll in the Virtual Senior Center or learn more about available programming can contact the Monroe County Office for the Aging by calling (585) 753-6280 or emailing [email protected]. Additional information about in-person senior centers and events is available through the county’s aging services webpage.
