Oswego County, New York – Authorities are searching for answers after a weekend fire in Oswego County left investigators probing what they now believe to be a case of arson. The blaze broke out on Sunday, September 21, 2025, just before 2 p.m., at a property located at 2701 State Route 3 in the town of Volney.

Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene after reports of a structure fire were called in at approximately 1:51 p.m. Firefighters worked to contain the flames, and while the building sustained damage, officials confirmed that no injuries have been reported.

State Police say the investigation is in its early stages, and the exact circumstances of how the fire began are still unclear. However, details from witnesses are already shaping the inquiry. According to authorities, a dark-colored vehicle was seen leaving the area around the time the fire was reported. Investigators are urging members of the public to come forward if they noticed anything unusual near the scene.

“Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area, or who may have information relevant to the case, to contact State Police at 315-366-6000 and refer to case number NY2500915303.”

The possibility of arson has heightened concern among residents of the Volney community, a rural area where neighbors are often quick to notice when something seems out of place. Officials stress that while the cause is still being determined, all leads will be carefully followed.

The fire adds to a string of challenges local responders have faced in recent weeks, with authorities reminding the public to remain alert and report any suspicious behavior. Law enforcement says continued cooperation from the community will be critical in bringing clarity to the investigation.
