Power outage closes Jackson R-Center and moves after-school students to Gantt
Rochester, New York – A power outage forced Rochester’s Trenton and Pamela Jackson R-Center to close for the remainder of the day on Oct. 21, prompting a change in arrangements for students who normally travel there after school.
The center, located at 485 N. Clinton Ave., will reopen as soon as electricity is restored, according to the city’s closure announcement. Rochester Gas & Electric indicated that the outage could last multiple days, leaving the reopening date uncertain at the time of the notice.
The utility’s estimate means the disruption could extend beyond the initial day of closure. However, the city did not announce a fixed period during which the building would remain shut. Its reopening is tied to the restoration of power.

For families with children who routinely take a bus to Jackson R-Center after school, the city has identified an alternate destination. Those students will be transferred to David F. Gantt R-Center, located at 700 North St., while Jackson is unavailable.
The transfer arrangement specifically concerns students who are routinely bused to Jackson after school. The announcement does not describe a broader relocation of every activity normally held at the building.
City staff will contact parents and guardians of registered R-Center participants with additional information. That direct communication will provide affected families with further details about the arrangements following the closure.

The notice identifies the power outage as the reason for closing the center but does not provide a cause for the electrical disruption or a precise restoration time. The possibility of a multiday outage is an estimate from Rochester Gas & Electric rather than a confirmed reopening schedule.
Residents planning to visit Jackson R-Center can check the city’s R-Centers webpage for status updates. The same page also provides information about other R-Center locations in Rochester.
Until power is restored, the city’s announced plan directs routinely bused after-school students to Gantt R-Center and asks residents to use the online updates to follow Jackson’s operating status.
