International Plaza continues August with a full lineup of themed community events

Rochester, New York – Rochester’s International Plaza is preparing for another month of cultural celebrations, with a full lineup of themed events planned throughout August that will bring together families, performers, local organizations, and visitors from across the community.

Located at 828 North Clinton Avenue, the Plaza will once again serve as a gathering place where music, dance, food, and cultural traditions take center stage. The August calendar features three major events, each highlighting different aspects of the city’s diverse heritage while offering activities for people of all ages.

The month begins with preparations for Dominican Day, scheduled from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16. The annual celebration is expected to showcase Dominican culture through live entertainment, traditional cuisine, and community activities, creating an afternoon filled with music and cultural pride.

One week later, the Plaza will host International Day of Salsa from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23. The event will spotlight the lively rhythms and traditions of salsa music and dance, inviting attendees to enjoy performances and experience one of Latin America’s most recognizable cultural expressions.

August will conclude with a Back-to-School Event on Sunday, Aug. 30, running from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers say the gathering is designed to help students prepare for the upcoming academic year by providing free school supplies and connecting families with community resources. The event combines practical support with family-friendly activities, giving children a positive start before classes begin.

Throughout the month, community members are encouraged to take part in the celebrations, which are intended to strengthen neighborhood connections while recognizing the many cultures that make up Rochester. Each event will feature a blend of music, dance performances, and food, giving visitors an opportunity to experience traditions from different backgrounds in a welcoming outdoor setting.

The activities planned for August are only part of a broader schedule that stretches into the fall. After the summer events wrap up, the International Plaza will continue hosting themed gatherings through September and October.

The upcoming calendar includes Rochester Trans Pride Fest on Sept. 5, followed the next day by Gospel in the Plaza. Additional events include the Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff on Sept. 13, a Fringe Festival presentation of Europa on Sept. 19, and ROC the Plaza with Grand Tone on Sept. 27.

The seasonal programming will continue into October with the Latin American Festival on Oct. 4 before concluding with the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration and Plaza Closing on Oct. 11.

Over the years, International Plaza has become an important destination in Rochester’s Northeast neighborhoods. The venue provides a welcoming space where residents and visitors can gather to enjoy cultural programming, discover international cuisine, and celebrate the traditions that have helped shape the city.
