New York State Police arrest 16-year-old juvenile accused of directing laser beam at State Police helicopter in Onondaga County

Syracuse, New York – New York State Police have arrested a 16-year-old after a State Police helicopter crew reported that a green laser was directed at the aircraft while it was operating near Buckley Road in the town of Salina.

The incident happened on July 17, 2026, at approximately 11:32 p.m., while the helicopter was flying in the area during operations connected to the Syracuse Nationals After Hours event. According to investigators, the pilot noticed a green laser entering the interior of the aircraft, creating a potentially dangerous situation for the flight crew.

After observing the laser, the helicopter pilot used the aircraft’s thermal imaging system to search for the source. The technology helped identify an individual located beneath an overhang near a picnic table who was allegedly pointing the laser toward the helicopter.

The pilot then communicated the individual’s location to State Police troopers assigned to ground patrol duties near the event. Troopers responded to the area and located the person believed to be involved in the incident.

The individual, identified as a 16-year-old juvenile, was taken into custody without incident. During the investigation, troopers recovered a laser-equipped device, which was secured and taken as evidence.

The juvenile was charged with Directing a Laser at an Aircraft in the First Degree. Authorities issued an appearance ticket for Onondaga County Youth Part Court, and the teenager was released into the custody of a parent while the legal process continues.

The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at SP North Syracuse.

State Police officials are reminding the public about the serious dangers associated with pointing lasers at aircraft. Although laser devices may appear harmless, directing a beam toward an aircraft can create significant risks for pilots, passengers, and people on the ground.
