Rochester, New York – Rochester Institute of Technology has officially received reaffirmation of its accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, completing a detailed multi-year review process focused on the university’s academic quality, operations, and long-term goals.

The commission notified RIT of its decision on June 25 after reviewing the university’s self-study report and completing an on-site evaluation earlier this year. The action formally confirms that RIT continues to meet the standards required for accreditation.

The evaluation included a campus visit from March 29 through April 1, when an eight-member team of peer reviewers examined the university’s work and met with members of the RIT community, including faculty, staff, students, trustees, and university leaders.

The accreditation process is designed to provide an independent assessment of a university’s ability to maintain strong academic programs and effective institutional practices. For RIT, the review examined several important areas, including the university’s mission, governance structure, academic offerings, student success efforts, available resources, planning processes, and overall institutional effectiveness.

Following the review, the evaluation team determined that RIT met all accreditation standards and requirements. The team also recognized several areas where the university has shown continued progress, including academic quality, hands-on learning opportunities, collaboration across different fields, international engagement, student support services, research expansion, and strategic planning.

The report also highlighted RIT’s 2035 Strategic Framework, noting that it closely supports the university’s mission and future direction. The framework outlines the institution’s priorities as it continues developing programs, expanding opportunities for students, and strengthening its role in education and research.

Christine Licata, vice provost for Academic Affairs and co-chair of the university’s Self-Study Steering Committee, said the successful accreditation outcome reflects the work of many people across the institution.

“Reaffirmation of accreditation reflects the dedication and commitment of faculty, staff, students, trustees, alumni, and university partners who contributed to this effort,” said Christine Licata, vice provost for Academic Affairs and co-chair of the university’s Self-Study Steering Committee. “The self-study process provided an opportunity not only to demonstrate compliance with accreditation standards but also to examine our strengths and identify areas for continuous improvement as we advance RIT’s mission and strategic priorities.”

The self-study process required extensive preparation and participation from departments throughout the university. Members of the RIT community contributed information, reviewed institutional practices, provided feedback, and helped identify both achievements and opportunities for improvement.

University officials said the accreditation process was not only a requirement but also an opportunity to evaluate progress and consider future goals. The review allowed RIT to examine how its programs and services support students while ensuring the university continues to adapt to changes in higher education.

RIT President Bill Sanders thanked the many individuals who contributed to the successful outcome and recognized the importance of collaboration throughout the process.

“This successful reaccreditation reflects contributions from hundreds of members of the RIT community who participated in working groups, provided feedback, contributed evidence, hosted campus evaluators, and helped advance the university’s continuous improvement efforts throughout the self-study process,” said RIT President Bill Sanders. “I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation for the thorough and collegial review process, noting that the findings accurately reflect RIT’s culture, achievements, and aspirations.”

Accreditation by MSCHE plays an important role for students, families, employers, and government organizations because it confirms that an institution meets established standards for quality and effectiveness. It also allows students to continue accessing federal financial aid programs and supports the recognition and transferability of academic credentials.

With the reaffirmation now complete, RIT’s next comprehensive evaluation by MSCHE is scheduled for the 2033–2034 academic year. Until then, university leaders say they will continue focusing on academic excellence, innovation, research, and improvements that support students and the broader RIT community.
