Authorities investigate fire involving multiple boats on Canandaigua Lake
Rochester, New York – Multiple boats caught fire early Thursday morning on Canandaigua Lake, sending thick smoke into the air and drawing a rapid emergency response from several fire departments in the area.
According to the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department, the blaze was reported within the Middlesex Fire District side of the lake. Fire crews were dispatched and responded alongside the Canandaigua Fire Department at approximately 5:04 a.m.
When firefighters arrived, they found multiple vessels already engulfed in flames. Video shared later by the Canandaigua Fire Department showed heavy smoke rising from the boats, with visibility reduced near the shoreline as crews worked to assess the situation.
The early morning timing of the incident added urgency to the response, as firefighters coordinated efforts to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further across the marina or nearby docked vessels. Officials have not yet released details on how many boats were involved or the extent of the damage.
At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Investigators have not confirmed what may have triggered the blaze, and no official determination has been made as crews continue to examine the scene.
Authorities also have not confirmed whether anyone was injured in the incident. It is still unclear if civilians or firefighters sustained any harm while responding to the fire, though emergency teams remained on site during the initial response period.
The fire prompted concern among lake residents and early morning visitors, as Canandaigua Lake is a popular recreational area known for boating activity, especially during the summer months. Incidents involving multiple boat fires are relatively uncommon in the region, adding to local attention surrounding the event.
Officials are expected to release additional updates once the investigation progresses and more information becomes available about the cause and impact of the fire.
For now, crews continue to review damage and gather evidence as part of the ongoing inquiry into what led to the sudden outbreak of flames on the lake.
