Rochester Animal Services launches ROC The Shelter open house to recruit more foster caregivers before facility renovations begin
Rochester, New York – As Rochester Animal Services prepares for a major facility improvement project this summer, the organization is turning to the community for support by expanding its network of foster caregivers. To help achieve that goal, the shelter will welcome residents to a special open house event focused on fostering and animal care.
The event, titled ROC The Shelter: RAS Foster Open House, is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 25. Shelter officials say the gathering is intended to provide residents with a better understanding of what fostering involves while encouraging more people to consider opening their homes to animals in need.
The timing is especially important as Rochester Animal Services gets ready to begin renovations on July 6. Construction work will temporarily reduce the amount of kennel space available at the shelter, increasing the need for temporary homes where animals can stay comfortably while awaiting adoption.
“These renovations are an important investment in the future of RAS and the animals we care for every day,” said RAS Director Staci Papadoplos. “As construction begins on July 6, we will temporarily have less kennel space available, making foster homes more important than ever. By further building our foster network now, we can ensure more animals continue receiving the care, comfort, and stability they deserve while we improve our facility.”
During the open house, attendees will have the opportunity to meet experienced foster caregivers and learn firsthand about their experiences caring for shelter animals. Organizers will also explain the fostering process, discuss the resources available to volunteers, and highlight the important role foster homes play in helping pets transition successfully into permanent families.
Shelter representatives hope the event will answer common questions and reassure prospective caregivers that support is available every step of the way. Rochester Animal Services provides foster volunteers with food, necessary supplies, veterinary care, and guidance from foster coordinators. Additional assistance is also available to help promote foster pets and increase their chances of finding adoptive homes.
Fostering offers animals a temporary refuge away from the shelter environment, giving them a safe place where they can receive daily care, companionship, and attention. For many pets, time spent in a foster home can improve socialization and help them adapt more easily when they eventually join a permanent family.
Officials emphasize that residents do not need to be ready to foster immediately in order to attend the event. Community members interested in learning more about the shelter’s needs during the renovation period are encouraged to participate. Those who complete the application and approval process can be added to the shelter’s foster network and contacted when future opportunities become available.
In addition to fostering, Rochester residents can support the shelter by adopting animals currently waiting for homes. To further encourage adoptions, Rochester Animal Services will host a Free Dog Friday event on June 26. Adoption fees for approved adopters will be waived, making it easier for families to welcome a new pet into their household.
Every dog adopted through the program will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before leaving the shelter, ensuring pets are ready for their new homes.
With construction on the horizon and animal care remaining a top priority, Rochester Animal Services hopes community members will step forward to help. Whether through fostering, adoption, or simply learning more about the shelter’s mission, officials believe local residents can play a critical role in ensuring animals continue receiving the support they need during the months ahead.
