Rochester City Hall and several public service offices to close on June 19 for Juneteenth observance

Rochester, New York – Residents planning to visit Rochester government offices or access certain city-operated services next week should be aware of temporary closures as the city prepares to observe Juneteenth on Friday, June 19.

A number of municipal buildings and administrative offices will suspend operations for the holiday, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is recognized as a federal and local observance.

Among the facilities that will be closed are Rochester City Hall, Neighborhood Service Centers, R-Centers, Rochester Animal Services, Rochester Public Libraries, the Rochester Traffic Violations Agency, and the administrative office building of the Honorable Loretta C. Scott Center for Human Services located at 57 St. Paul Street.

The closures will affect in-person services for one day, with normal operations expected to resume following the holiday weekend. City officials encourage residents to plan ahead if they need assistance from any of the affected departments or facilities.

In addition to office closures, changes will also impact waste collection services across the city. Refuse and recycling pickup will not take place on Friday, June 19. As a result, collection schedules will shift, with all affected pickups delayed by one day. Residents are advised to place their containers out according to the revised schedule to avoid missing service.

While many city services will pause for the holiday, some essential operations will remain available. Rochester’s 311 Call Center will continue serving residents during its regular hours. The service will be open from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. on June 19, allowing community members to report concerns, seek information, or request assistance despite the broader holiday closures.

Juneteenth has become an increasingly significant observance across communities nationwide, with public agencies and organizations using the day to reflect on history, celebrate freedom, and recognize the ongoing contributions of Black Americans.
