Rochester, New York – The City of Rochester is rolling out a new round of free learning opportunities this summer as part of its Rochester Community University program, aiming to give residents practical tools to help strengthen neighborhoods and build stronger local connections.

Officials say the initiative is designed for everyday people who want to get more involved in community life, whether they are part of a neighborhood group, running a small business, or simply interested in local improvement efforts. The sessions are open to all residents, and participation is free of charge.

“Rochester Community University connects residents with the knowledge, resources, and relationships that help strengthen our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “These free sessions offer practical information and opportunities for residents to become even more engaged in the future of our city.”

The Summer 2026 lineup includes two interactive workshops led by local leaders and community partners. Each session focuses on a different angle of community development, blending practical skills with real-world examples that participants can apply right away in their own neighborhoods.

The first workshop, titled “More Than Likes: Using Social Media to Strengthen Community,” will take place online via Zoom from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24. Organizers say the session will focus on how digital tools can be used in a more meaningful way, moving beyond casual posting and into real community engagement. Participants will learn how to share local information more effectively, promote neighborhood events, and build stronger communication between residents.

City officials describe the goal as helping people turn everyday social media use into something that supports real connections rather than just online activity.

The second workshop, “Build Impact with the Southeast Area Coalition Tool Shed,” will be held in person from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Monday 29. This session will introduce participants to resources available through the Southeast Area Coalition Tool Shed Program. These tools and supports can be used for neighborhood projects, local business needs, and broader community improvement efforts.

Unlike the first session, this one is expected to focus more on hands-on community development, showing how shared resources can help reduce costs and increase cooperation among residents and organizations.

Both sessions are part of a broader effort to encourage civic participation and strengthen ties across Rochester’s neighborhoods. City officials note that space may be limited, and interested participants are encouraged to register early.
