Penfield, New York – As communities across the United States mark the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, the Town of Penfield is using the milestone to shine a light on something much closer to home — the people, places, and events that helped shape its own local identity. At the heart of that effort are two passionate historians, Town Historian Kathy Kanauer and Local History Room Coordinator Anna Jarvis, whose work is helping residents rediscover the stories woven into the area’s past.

The pair are leading the Town’s Penfield 250 initiative, a yearlong celebration that explores the region’s history through exhibits, presentations, educational programs, and special community events. While the national America 250 observance focuses on the country’s semiquincentennial, Penfield’s version takes a more local approach, inviting residents to reflect on the history that existed in the region long before the town was officially established.

Planning for the project began last year, drawing inspiration from the broader America 250 and New York 250 programs while adapting those ideas to highlight the unique heritage of Penfield. Organizers wanted to create an experience that not only commemorates a national milestone but also encourages people to better understand the roots of their own community.

According to Town Historian Kathy Kanauer, the story of the area stretches far beyond the date Penfield was incorporated in 1810. She believes the anniversary offers a meaningful opportunity to recognize the generations of people who lived, worked, and traveled through the region long before it became the town residents know today.

“The Town of Penfield is not 250 years old, but this area carries stories from that time,” said Town Historian Kathy Kanauer. “From Indigenous people harvesting natural resources, to French and Native American fur traders, to the very early settlers, the land was in use long before Penfield was named.”

Kanauer’s connection to preserving local history spans decades. She first joined the Town’s historical efforts in 1995 when she became the Local History Room Coordinator, a position she held until 2022. In 2005, she was appointed Town Historian, taking on the responsibility of documenting, protecting, and sharing Penfield’s historical record with the community. Over the years, she has become one of the area’s leading voices on local heritage, helping ensure that stories from the past remain accessible for future generations.

Working alongside her is Anna Jarvis, who will mark four years with the Town this July. As the Local History Room Coordinator, Jarvis manages the historical collection and oversees the Local History Room’s Facebook page, where many of the discoveries and stories connected to Penfield 250 are shared with the public. Her role has included researching historical records, organizing exhibits, and helping transform archival material into engaging content that resonates with residents of all ages.

Together, Kanauer and Jarvis have helped turn Penfield 250 into more than a simple anniversary observance. The initiative is designed to encourage curiosity and conversation, giving community members the chance to learn about the people who came before them and the events that influenced the growth of the area over centuries.

The celebration includes a wide range of activities, from educational presentations and historical exhibits to interactive programs that invite residents to connect with local history in a hands-on way. Many of the featured events are being organized in partnership with Penfield Recreation and the Penfield Public Library, creating a collaborative community effort that will culminate in a series of special activities during the week leading up to Independence Day.

Town leaders say the success of the project is largely due to the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff members guiding it. Their research and planning have helped create a program that honors the past while making history approachable and relevant for modern audiences.

“The work that both Anna and Kathy have put in to make this all possible has been tremendous,” said Town Supervisor Kevin Berry. “The Town of Penfield has such a rich history, and we are excited to be able to share it with our community as our country also celebrates its 250th birthday.”

As the nationwide America 250 commemoration continues, Penfield’s local celebration serves as a reminder that history is often best understood through the stories found close to home. Through the efforts of Kathy Kanauer and Anna Jarvis, residents are being given a unique opportunity to look back, learn more about the community around them, and appreciate the generations of people whose lives helped shape Penfield into what it is today.
