Rochester launches major hiring campaign to attract mechanics and technicians at every stage of their career
Rochester, New York – The City of Rochester is opening the door to a wide range of job seekers with a new recruitment campaign aimed at attracting mechanics and service technicians to its Department of Environmental Services. City leaders say the effort is about more than filling vacancies — it is about building a skilled workforce that keeps essential public services operating every day of the year.
Announced by Mayor Malik D. Evans and the Department of Environmental Services (DES), the initiative highlights the often-overlooked role that municipal mechanics play behind the scenes. From repairing heavy-duty trucks to maintaining specialized equipment, these workers help ensure that residents receive reliable city services regardless of the season.
Rochester depends on an extensive fleet of vehicles and machinery to carry out critical operations. Snowplows clear roads during winter storms, collection trucks handle recycling and waste services, and maintenance vehicles support street repairs and public safety efforts. Keeping that equipment in top condition falls to the technicians and mechanics working within the DES fleet division.
City officials believe many people may not realize the variety of career paths available in this field or the impact those jobs have on everyday life in the community. The new campaign is designed to change that perception while encouraging both experienced professionals and those just beginning their careers to consider joining the municipal workforce.

“This campaign is about showing people the real impact of this work and the opportunities it creates,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “Our mechanics are the crew behind the scenes who keep Rochester moving. If you’re looking for a career where you can build skills, work with your hands and make a difference each day, this is that opportunity.”
The hiring initiative spans multiple levels of experience, creating opportunities for candidates with different backgrounds and technical abilities. Current openings include positions such as garage attendant, automotive aide, heavy mechanic, master automotive technician, master truck technician, and senior automotive maintenance mechanic.
By recruiting across a broad spectrum of roles, city leaders hope to strengthen the long-term talent pipeline while giving newcomers a chance to develop practical skills and advance through the organization. Officials say the strategy is intended to support workforce development while ensuring the city can continue maintaining the equipment that residents rely on.
“This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to start fresh or take the next step in their career,” said Kabutey Ocansey, the City’s Commissioner of Environmental Services. “We have a strong team in place and are looking for individuals who are ready to learn, contribute, and grow with us. There has never been a better time to join the City’s workforce.”
Beyond the hands-on nature of the work, the city is emphasizing the stability and benefits that come with public sector employment. Employees have access to health, dental, and vision coverage, retirement and pension plans, paid time off, and ongoing training opportunities that can help them build long-term careers. Advancement within the department is also a key part of the recruitment message, with officials encouraging applicants to view the positions as more than just jobs.
Applications for the available mechanic and fleet service positions will remain open until all vacancies have been filled. City officials are encouraging anyone with an interest in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance — whether they are entering the field for the first time or bringing years of experience — to explore the opportunities and become part of the team that helps keep Rochester running smoothly every day.
