Albany, New York – A tragic overnight collision on Interstate 90 in Albany has left one person dead and another seriously injured, prompting an ongoing investigation by State Police into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Authorities were called to the westbound side of I-90 near Exit 5A shortly before 2 a.m. on June 7, 2026, after reports of a severe head-on collision involving two vehicles. Emergency responders arrived at the scene at approximately 1:53 a.m. and immediately began assessing the situation.
According to preliminary findings, investigators determined that one of the vehicles had been traveling in the wrong direction. The eastbound vehicle was reportedly moving through the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with a vehicle that was legally traveling westbound.

Meanwhile, the driver of the wrong-way vehicle survived the crash but suffered serious injuries. Emergency medical personnel transported that individual to Albany Medical Center for treatment. Fatal wrong-way crashes remain among the most dangerous types of highway incidents because of the high speeds and limited reaction time involved. Investigators are now focused on understanding what caused the vehicle to enter the highway in the wrong direction and whether any additional factors contributed to the collision.
State Police said the investigation remains active. Further information is expected to be released as authorities continue reviewing evidence gathered from the scene.
