The Flower City School No. 54 brings inspiration to rainy days

Rochester, New York – Gray skies and rainy afternoons are often associated with gloomy moods, but students at The Flower City School No. 54 are proving that a little creativity can completely change that perspective.

The school community recently celebrated the launch of the “Lighting Paths” rain beautification project, a student-led initiative designed to bring encouragement, positivity, and a sense of belonging to everyone who walks near the school. The project officially debuted on May 29, transforming ordinary sidewalks into unexpected sources of inspiration whenever rain begins to fall.

What makes the effort especially unique is the way the messages work. Using environmentally friendly spray materials and specially designed stencils, students placed uplifting phrases along sidewalks surrounding the school. Under normal dry conditions, the messages remain hidden from view. However, as soon as rain touches the pavement, the words suddenly appear, creating a surprising and meaningful experience for students, families, and community members.

The idea originated with the school’s Student Council, whose members learned about similar projects and believed the concept could make a positive difference within their own school environment. After discussing the possibility, students voted to move forward with the initiative, taking ownership of the planning and execution process from start to finish.

For the young leaders involved, the project represents far more than decorative sidewalk art. It is part of a broader effort to strengthen connections among students and ensure that everyone feels welcomed and valued.

“The project we are working on is to build our school community and connect with the little kids in our school so they know they can feel included,” said Hermari Lamberty, Student Council President and a fifth-grade student at School No. 54. “As kids grow up, they don’t always feel included and special, and it’s important they feel that way. We want them to be included so they won’t feel sad and won’t be enclosed in their rooms and be stuck on their devices all day.”

The initiative reflects a growing focus on student leadership and peer support, demonstrating how young people can take active roles in shaping the atmosphere of their schools. By creating messages intended to brighten someone’s day, Student Council members hope to foster kindness, empathy, and a stronger sense of community among students of all ages.

The rain-activated artwork was only one part of the day’s activities. Student Council members also spent time outdoors decorating the area with colorful chalk drawings and additional welcoming designs. The vibrant artwork added another layer of positivity, helping transform common gathering spaces into places filled with color and encouragement.

School leaders view the project as an example of what can happen when students are empowered to bring their ideas to life. Rather than waiting for adults to create change, students identified a need, developed a solution, and worked together to make it a reality.

As the hidden messages wait quietly beneath dry pavement, they serve as a reminder that inspiration can appear when it is least expected. The next rainfall will not simply bring wet sidewalks to The Flower City School No. 54—it will reveal words of encouragement created by students who want their classmates to feel seen, supported, and connected.

Through imagination, teamwork, and a commitment to inclusion, the students behind “Lighting Paths” have shown that even the rainiest day can become an opportunity to spread hope and strengthen community bonds.
