Rochester, New York – A portion of Genesee Street is temporarily closed after a water main break prompted emergency repair work on one of the city’s key utility systems, causing short-term traffic changes for drivers in the area.

City officials confirmed that the southbound lane of Genesee Street between West Main Street and Clifton Street has been shut down while crews work to repair damage linked to the Holly System water main. The closure is expected to remain in place until construction is completed, which authorities say should happen by the end of the day, barring any unexpected delays.

Despite the disruption to traffic, officials emphasized that the issue has not impacted residential water service. Homes and nearby properties continue to receive normal water supply while repair teams focus on the affected section of the main line.

The break prompted a quick response from city utility crews, who moved in to isolate the damaged section and begin restoration work. While the exact cause of the break has not been publicly detailed, water main failures can occur due to aging infrastructure, shifting ground conditions, or sudden pressure changes within the system.

For now, drivers traveling through the area are being asked to plan ahead and adjust their routes. City officials are encouraging motorists to avoid the affected stretch of Genesee Street and instead use alternate corridors to reduce congestion near the construction zone.

Traffic control measures are in place, including posted detours and flaggers who are helping guide vehicles safely around the work area. Authorities are also reminding drivers to slow down and remain alert when passing through nearby intersections, as crews and equipment remain active close to moving traffic.

Even though the closure is limited to a single southbound lane, the impact is expected to be noticeable during peak travel times. Commuters heading toward downtown or connecting to nearby routes may experience slight delays as vehicles merge and navigate detour patterns.

City officials say the repair work is being prioritized to restore full roadway access as quickly as possible. Once the damaged section of the Holly System water main is fixed and tested, crews will reopen the lane and remove temporary traffic controls.

Residents in the surrounding neighborhoods have been reassured that water service stability remains unchanged. Officials also noted that updates will be provided if conditions shift or if the repair timeline needs adjustment.

For now, the situation remains a short-term disruption rather than a long-term outage. Still, drivers are being urged to stay cautious, follow all posted instructions, and allow crews the space needed to complete repairs safely and efficiently.
