Rochester, New York – Authorities in northern New York are continuing to investigate a fatal crash involving a golf cart and a pickup truck that occurred Tuesday afternoon in the town of Alexandria.

According to the New York State Police, emergency crews were dispatched to the scene shortly before 3 p.m. on May 12 following reports of a serious collision on State Route 12 near the intersection of Pinehurst Road in Alexandria Bay.

Troopers responded alongside several local emergency agencies, including the Alexandria Bay Fire Department, Alexandria Bay Ambulance, and Thousand Island Emergency Rescue Service, commonly known as TIERS. The Alexandria Bay Police Department also assisted at the scene as first responders worked to secure the roadway and provide emergency aid.

Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that the crash happened when the driver of a 2013 EZGO TXT golf cart attempted to cross State Route 12. Police say the golf cart was moving from the east shoulder of the roadway toward the west shoulder when it entered the path of a southbound 2018 Ford F150 pickup truck traveling along the highway.

The impact left the golf cart operator critically injured. Emergency medical personnel transported the individual to River Hospital for treatment, but despite lifesaving efforts, the victim was later pronounced dead.

Officials have not yet publicly released the identity of the deceased pending further investigation and family notification.

The collision temporarily drew a large emergency response to the area, with traffic affected as investigators documented evidence and reconstructed the scene. State Route 12 is one of the main travel corridors through the Thousand Islands region, particularly busy during the warmer months as tourism activity increases across the area.

Investigators are now working to determine all factors that may have contributed to the crash, including vehicle movements, roadway conditions, visibility, and witness observations. Authorities have not indicated whether any charges or citations are expected as the investigation remains active.

Fatal crashes involving golf carts on public roadways continue to raise safety concerns in many communities, especially in areas where golf carts are frequently used for short-distance transportation. Unlike standard passenger vehicles, golf carts provide limited protection during high-impact collisions, particularly on roads shared with larger vehicles traveling at highway speeds.

For residents in the Alexandria Bay area, Tuesday’s crash marked a tragic afternoon in a community preparing for another busy spring and summer season.

State Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
