County Executive Adam Bello announces free community summit in Rochester to support families combatting substance abuse
Rochester, New York – As communities across the United States continue grappling with the evolving substance use crisis, leaders in Rochester are taking a step aimed at supporting families directly impacted by addiction. A new community-focused event hopes to bring people together, offering education, support, and practical guidance during a time when many families are searching for answers.
Officials from Monroe County Department of Public Health, the City of Rochester, Facing Fentanyl, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration New York Division are joining forces to host a free Substance Use Family Summit later this month. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18 at East High School.
The gathering is designed to create a space where families, community members, and substance use professionals can come together to talk openly about the challenges many households face. Organizers say the goal is not only to inform but also to build a supportive network where people feel less alone while navigating addiction and recovery.
Throughout the summit, participants will hear from professionals working in prevention, treatment, and recovery services. Sessions will focus on a wide range of topics, including emerging drug trends, strategies for overdose prevention, coping with grief and loss, and pathways toward recovery. In addition to expert insights, families will also hear personal stories from parents and peers who have lived through similar experiences.
County leaders believe that community conversations like this one are essential in confronting a crisis that continues to affect families at every level.
“Families across Monroe County are navigating the challenges of substance use every day, and they deserve clear information and support they can trust,” said Adam Bello, Monroe County Executive. “This summit connects people to real resources, practical guidance and a network of care. By working together, we can strengthen prevention, support recovery and help more residents find a path forward.”
The summit reflects a broader effort by local governments and community organizations to respond to the growing impact of substance misuse, including the rise of synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. Many families often struggle to find reliable information, support systems, or resources while trying to help loved ones dealing with addiction.
City officials say this event is meant to bridge that gap.
Malik D. Evans, Mayor of Rochester, emphasized the importance of collaboration and community support when addressing substance abuse.
“Hope and opportunity are a powerful combination,” said Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans. “I encourage all families navigating substance abuse to join us for this free summit to receive resources and support from partners at every level of our government and community. Let’s face this challenge together.”
Organizers say the summit will include opportunities for attendees to connect directly with experts, ask questions, and learn about local services available for individuals and families dealing with addiction. Informational resources will also be available to help participants better understand prevention strategies and treatment options.

Although the event is free to attend, participants are encouraged to register ahead of time to secure their spot. Registration must be completed by Wednesday, April 15 through the city’s online portal. Those who sign up in advance will receive lunch during the event as well as a commemorative t-shirt.
The summit’s organizers hope the day will serve not only as an educational opportunity but also as a moment of solidarity for families who may feel overwhelmed by the challenges surrounding substance use.
Anyone seeking additional information about the event can contact Monroe County Addiction Services by phone at (585) 753-5300 or by email at [email protected].
By bringing together families, professionals, and community leaders under one roof, the upcoming summit aims to foster understanding, strengthen prevention efforts, and remind those affected by addiction that support and hope remain within reach.
