Fatal one-vehicle crash on State Route 590 in Irondequoit prompts ongoing investigation by New York State Police
Irondequoit, New York – Authorities in Irondequoit, New York are continuing to investigate a fatal crash that occurred Thursday evening along New York State Route 590. The incident, which involved only one vehicle, left a 60-year-old driver dead after his vehicle left the roadway and crashed near the shoulder.
According to the New York State Police, the crash was reported shortly after 6 p.m. on April 2. Troopers were dispatched at approximately 6:05 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious collision along the highway in the town located in Monroe County, New York.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they discovered a damaged vehicle resting off the roadway. Investigators said the vehicle, identified as a 2022 Honda Odyssey, had come to a stop in a ditch along the east shoulder of the highway.
Inside the vehicle, responders found the driver — the only person in the car — unresponsive.
First responders from the Irondequoit Fire Department and emergency medical personnel quickly began providing medical assistance at the scene. The man was then transported to Strong Memorial Hospital in nearby Rochester, New York. Despite efforts to save him, officials confirmed that he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Investigators believe the crash may have been triggered by a medical emergency while the driver was behind the wheel.
Preliminary findings suggest the vehicle had been traveling northbound on Route 590 when the driver experienced what authorities described as a suspected medical event. As a result, the driver became unresponsive while the vehicle was still in motion.
Without control of the vehicle, the minivan first drifted toward the west shoulder of the roadway. It then struck a concrete barrier before continuing across the highway.
After crossing lanes, the vehicle exited the roadway entirely, traveling onto the east shoulder. It ultimately left the pavement and crashed into several trees before coming to rest in a ditch.
The sequence of events unfolded quickly, investigators said, and there were no reports of other vehicles being involved in the crash.
Traffic along the highway was affected for a period of time as emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators began documenting evidence. Troopers examined the crash site, vehicle damage, and surrounding roadway conditions as part of their ongoing investigation.
At this stage, authorities believe the medical emergency was a key factor in the crash, though officials say the investigation remains active while they continue reviewing details.
Fatal crashes involving medical events are not uncommon, according to transportation safety experts, and can occur when a driver suddenly loses consciousness or becomes incapacitated while operating a vehicle.
For now, investigators are working to fully reconstruct the incident and confirm the circumstances that led to the crash.
Officials say the investigation into the fatal collision on State Route 590 remains ongoing.
