New York – State troopers are investigating a two-vehicle crash that disrupted traffic along Interstate 88 in the town of Sidney on Friday afternoon. The collision prompted a temporary shutdown of the westbound lanes as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and ensure driver safety.

According to New York State Police, the crash occurred on January 9, 2026, at approximately 4:30 p.m. Troopers from the Sidney barracks were dispatched after reports of a tractor trailer and a pickup truck colliding while traveling westbound on the highway. Both vehicles were moving in the same direction when they made contact under circumstances that remain under investigation.

Following the impact, the pickup truck left the roadway. The tractor trailer also exited the highway and ultimately tipped onto its side, creating a significant obstruction and prompting an immediate response from multiple agencies. Authorities did not report any additional vehicles being involved.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 77-year-old man, sustained injuries in the crash. He was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center for treatment and was later listed in stable condition. The operator of the tractor trailer, a 56-year-old man, was taken to A.O. Fox Hospital as a precautionary measure to be evaluated. Police said his transport was for medical assessment, and no serious injuries were immediately reported.

Due to the size of the tractor trailer and the complexity of removing it from the roadway, Interstate 88 westbound was shut down for several hours. Traffic was diverted off the highway at Exit 10 to allow crews to safely manage the scene and begin recovery operations. Motorists traveling through the area experienced delays as detours were put in place.

Troopers were joined by members of the New York State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, who assisted with examining the tractor trailer and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Investigators from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation also responded to help determine how the crash occurred and whether any contributing factors played a role.

The New York State Department of Transportation assisted troopers with traffic control and the closure of the highway. Heavy equipment was brought in to remove the overturned tractor trailer, a process that required careful coordination to avoid further hazards.

State Police said the westbound lanes of Interstate 88 would remain closed until the tractor trailer was fully removed and the roadway deemed safe for travel. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and no additional details were released as of Friday evening.
