State police continue detailed investigation into deadly motor vehicle crash that claimed a life in rural Steuben County
Steuben County, New York – Authorities in Steuben County are continuing to investigate a deadly motor vehicle crash that claimed the life of a plow truck operator early on New Year’s Day. The incident occurred on Grinnold Road in the town of Troupsburg and is now the subject of an active investigation by the New York State Police in Painted Post.
According to state police, troopers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 6:56 a.m. on January 1, 2026, after receiving a report of a rollover crash involving a plow truck. Initial information indicated that the driver was trapped inside the vehicle, prompting a rapid response from emergency crews.
Before troopers arrived, first responders were able to extricate the operator from the truck. Emergency medical services transported the individual to St. James Hospital for treatment. While troopers worked the scene, they located a 2024 Freightliner plow truck that had left the roadway and come to rest off the south shoulder. The vehicle was found lying on its passenger side.

Investigators noted that the truck exited the roadway for reasons that remain unknown at this time. The conditions leading up to the crash, including possible road, weather, or mechanical factors, have not yet been determined.
Tragically, while troopers were still on location, they were informed that the driver had died from his injuries while being transported to the hospital. The operator was identified as a 44-year-old male. His name has not been released, pending further investigation and notification procedures.
The Steuben County Coroner responded to the scene shortly thereafter. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the official cause of death, which will assist investigators as they work to fully understand what led to the fatal crash.
State police have not indicated whether additional vehicles were involved, and no other injuries were reported. Grinnold Road remained the focus of investigative efforts as troopers documented the scene and gathered evidence.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not released further details and say more information will be provided as it becomes available.
