Henrietta, New York – Residents with questions about property ownership, long-term planning, or estate decisions will have an opportunity to gain clarity later this month during a public seminar focused on life estates. The informational session, titled “Effects of Transferring Real Property While Retaining a Life Estate,” is designed to help homeowners better understand how property can be transferred while allowing an individual to continue living in or using the home for life.

The seminar is being jointly hosted by the Assessor’s Offices of the Towns of Chili, Henrietta, and Rush, reflecting a shared effort to provide clear and practical guidance on a topic that often raises confusion. Life estates—sometimes referred to as “Life Use” or “Life Interest”—are legal arrangements that can affect property taxes, ownership rights, and future transfers, making accurate information especially important for residents considering this option.

An attorney from Evans Fox LLP will lead the presentation, offering professional insight into how life estates work and what property owners should consider before making any decisions. The discussion will focus on the real-world effects of transferring real property while keeping a life interest, including how such transfers may impact ownership control, tax assessments, and responsibilities tied to the property.

Organizers say the session is intended for homeowners, seniors, and family members who want a better understanding of how life estates function and what consequences may arise over time. While the seminar will not provide individual legal advice, it aims to give attendees a solid foundation so they can make more informed choices or know when to seek further professional guidance.

The event is scheduled for January 27, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., and will take place at the Town of Chili Community Center, located at 3237 Chili Avenue. The one-hour format is designed to be accessible while still covering key points related to life estates and property transfers.

Residents interested in attending are encouraged to register in advance, as space may be limited. Registration is being handled through the Henrietta Assessor’s Office, and those wishing to sign up can do so by calling 585-359-7032.

Local officials note that educational events like this help residents better navigate complex property topics and avoid misunderstandings that can lead to unexpected outcomes. By bringing together municipal offices and legal expertise, the seminar aims to provide clear, reliable information in a setting that is open and easy to access for the community.
