Penfield residents can recycle natural Christmas trees at the DPW facility or sign up for a convenient community curbside pickup

Penfield, New York – As the holiday season comes to a close, Penfield residents have several easy and environmentally friendly options for disposing of their Christmas trees. Instead of sending trees to the landfill, the Town of Penfield is encouraging the community to recycle natural Christmas trees through a local drop-off program or a one-day curbside collection.

The Penfield Department of Public Works is once again accepting real, non-artificial Christmas trees for recycling at its facility located at 1607 Jackson Road. Residents may drop off trees at any time, making the process flexible and convenient for households wrapping up their holiday cleanup. Trees should be placed on the north side of the DPW property, clearly marked by the “X-Mas Trees” sign.

Town officials say recycling Christmas trees not only reduces waste but also helps create useful materials for the community. All trees collected through the DPW program will be ground into mulch. That mulch will then be added to the town’s mulch pile, located in the parking lot at Columbus Crossing near Town Hall. Residents can later take advantage of this recycled mulch for landscaping and gardening projects when it becomes available.

For residents who prefer not to transport their tree, a curbside option is also being offered through a local community organization. Color Penfield Green, a partner in the town’s sustainability efforts, will host a Christmas tree pickup on Saturday, January 10. The group will collect trees directly from participating households and deliver them to the Penfield DPW for recycling.

To take part in the curbside pickup, residents are asked to complete a simple online form in advance. This allows organizers to plan efficient routes and ensure all trees are collected properly. Trees should be placed curbside according to the instructions provided after registration.

Both recycling options are limited to natural Christmas trees only. Artificial trees, decorations, lights, tinsel, and tree stands must be removed before drop-off or pickup. Officials remind residents that clean, undecorated trees help keep the recycling process smooth and efficient.
