RCSD marks a major step in early literacy as Senator Cooney delivers expanded state support for the Imagination Library program
Rochester, New York – A morning that began with routine school activity in Rochester quickly turned into a moment of community pride as the Rochester City School District (RCSD) highlighted a major achievement in its push to strengthen childhood literacy. The district celebrated the delivery of its 100,000th free book through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, marking a significant step forward in expanding reading access for Rochester’s youngest learners.
The event centered on a visit from State Senator Jeremy Cooney, who joined district leaders at Flower City School No. 54 to announce new state support for early literacy initiatives. Senator Cooney revealed that this year’s New York State budget includes $1 million dedicated to Imagination Library programs across the state, with $49,000 directed specifically to the Rochester chapter. He also outlined plans to advocate for an additional $7 million in next year’s budget to help bring the program to even more communities.
Speaking to students gathered for the milestone celebration, Senator Cooney underscored the importance of early reading access. “We want to make sure you have access to literacy and the joy of reading,” he said. “All children deserve access to free and quality books.”
RCSD Superintendent Dr. Eric Jay Rosser emphasized that each book sent to a child carries long-term academic value. “Each book that will be delivered is more than just a story; it is an investment in building academic strength, which we all understand is the foundation for learning,” he said. “By increasing access to books, we are helping children develop literacy skills early, build a foundation for success in school, and experience the joy and wonder reading brings.”
While the celebration unfolded in Rochester, New York State Police were responding to an unrelated situation downstate. At approximately 9:01 a.m. on November 25, 2025, authorities were dispatched to State Route 281 in Cortlandville after a passerby discovered a deceased individual near railroad tracks beside Pall Trinity. Police reported that they are actively working to identify the person and determine the circumstances surrounding the death. No additional details were released.
Despite the somber news from Cortlandville, RCSD leaders say the literacy milestone stands as a reminder of the continued work being done to support children and families across the region.
