Mayor Evans launches Cool Sweep to protect residents from extreme heat heading into the weekend and beyond

Rochester, New York – With temperatures rising and expected to remain dangerously high through the weekend and into next week, the City of Rochester is stepping in to keep residents safe and cool. On Thursday, Mayor Malik D. Evans announced the activation of the City’s Cool Sweep program — a seasonal initiative that provides residents with access to air-conditioned spaces, water features, and cooling centers.

“During times of extreme heat, it’s important that we offer our residents safe and comfortable places to cool down,” Mayor Evans said in a statement. “We’re opening up a range of city resources to make sure our families, seniors, and even pets have the support they need to get through the heatwave.”

Cooling Centers Open Across the City

The Cool Sweep program includes the opening of City R-Centers, spray parks, and select library branches — all of which will operate with extended or regular summer hours to help the public stay out of the heat. The R-Centers, which serve as neighborhood hubs, are open on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Locations include:

• Adams Street, Avenue D, Carter Street, David F. Gantt, Edgerton, Frederick Douglass, Trenton and Pamela Jackson, Willie Walker Lightfoot, and the Rochester Community Sports Complex (open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.).

These centers offer not just air-conditioned spaces, but also indoor activities for youth and families.

Spray Parks and Water Play for All Ages

For families looking for a fun way to cool off, several spray parks are available across the city and are open daily from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. These locations include Carter Street, Edgerton, David F. Gantt, Thomas P. Ryan, Roxie Ann Sinkler, Hope, and Humboldt R-Centers.

In addition to these, smaller spray features can be found at Fourth and Peck Playground and Troup Street Park, also operating from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. These offer a playful and accessible option for younger children and nearby residents who may not have access to transportation.

Swimming Options Available at Select Locations

Residents looking for a full swim can visit Durand Eastman Beach, located at 1342 Lakeshore Blvd., open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, city officials encourage everyone to check current water conditions before heading out by calling the Monroe County Beach Information Line at (585) 753-5887.

Two indoor pools are also available for public use:

• Adams Street R-Center Pool and
• Trenton and Pamela Jackson R-Center Pool,
both open daily from 12 noon to 6 p.m.

Libraries Offer a Quiet, Cool Escape

For those looking for a quieter environment, several Rochester Public Library branches are open and air-conditioned. These include the Arnett, Central, Charlotte, Frederick Douglass, Lincoln, Lyell, Maplewood, Monroe, Phillis Wheatley, Sully, and Winton branches. Each provides not only a cool retreat but also access to reading materials, public computers, and family-friendly activities.

Residents are encouraged to call ahead to confirm hours, as they may vary by branch.

Health and Safety Are Top Priority

City officials are urging residents to take simple but essential precautions during extreme heat. Staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak sun hours, and regularly checking on elderly neighbors or family members are just a few steps that can make a big difference.

Pets should not be left outdoors for long periods, and everyone is reminded never to leave a child or animal in a parked vehicle, even briefly.
