Routine traffic stop on Interstate 87 in Ulster County results in seizure of over 300 grams of cocaine
Ulster County, New York – A routine traffic stop on the New York State Thruway turned into a major drug bust earlier this month, after New York State Police discovered over 300 grams of cocaine during a search of a vehicle.
On the evening of June 2, 2025, around 6:00 p.m., troopers from the State Police Kingston barracks pulled over a 2010 Infiniti heading northbound on Interstate 87 near Exit 19 in the town of Ulster. According to police, the vehicle was stopped for multiple violations of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws.
The driver, identified as 35-year-old Peter A. Fabregas of Yonkers, NY, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. After initial questioning, troopers requested assistance from K9 Scotty, a trained narcotics detection dog. During an exterior sniff of the vehicle, K9 Scotty alerted officers to the possible presence of illegal drugs inside the car.
Following the alert, troopers conducted a full search of the vehicle’s interior. Their search led to the discovery of approximately 322 grams of cocaine—a substantial amount that immediately triggered felony-level charges.
Fabregas was taken into custody at the scene without incident and was later processed at the State Police barracks in Kingston. Police officials stated that the amount of cocaine seized suggested the drugs were not for personal use, but likely intended for distribution.
As a result of the seizure, Fabregas was charged with multiple felony drug offenses, including:
• Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree, a Class A-I felony
• Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a Class B felony
• Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fourth Degree, a Class C felony
In addition to the drug-related charges, Fabregas also faces citations for multiple traffic violations.
He was arraigned the following day, June 3, in the Town of Ulster Court. A judge ordered that Fabregas be remanded to the Ulster County Jail without bail.
Authorities have not released further details about the source or intended destination of the drugs, and the investigation remains ongoing.
State Police emphasized the role of K9 Scotty in the bust, highlighting the dog’s training and effectiveness in identifying hidden narcotics.
“This was a textbook example of excellent police work combined with the skill of our K9 unit,” a spokesperson said. “These kinds of seizures help keep dangerous drugs off our streets and communities safer.”
Fabregas is expected to appear in court again later this month.
