Pittsford Recreation introduces a full schedule of weekly exercise classes designed to support senior health and independence in 2025

Pittsford, New York – In Pittsford, staying active during retirement just got easier and more enjoyable. The town’s Recreation Department is making major strides in promoting wellness among older adults by offering a full lineup of affordable and diverse exercise classes designed with seniors in mind. With eleven distinct programs available each week, residents aged 65 and over have more options than ever to keep moving, feel better, and remain independent for years to come.
The science is clear—regular physical activity is one of the most powerful tools for aging well. Exercise can help slow down the physical and cognitive decline that often comes with age. According to health experts, working out regularly helps prevent bone loss, improves heart health, reduces the risk of cancer, boosts the immune system, and even elevates mood. For seniors, it can also relieve osteoarthritis pain, reduce anxiety and depression, enhance flexibility, and improve sleep. Most importantly, it helps people avoid dangerous falls and maintain the strength and balance needed to live independently.
“Exercise for older adults should consist of three key components: cardiovascular exercise, muscle-strengthening exercises and balance-improving activities,” notes the Pittsford Recreation team. “You can easily build a personalized exercise program that incorporates all three of these components through Pittsford Recreation, or supplement a class or two with a brisk outdoor walk or other outdoor or home-based exercise.”
That’s why the team at Pittsford Recreation is focused on making fitness fun, approachable, and accessible to all seniors in the area. Residents of Pittsford can join these classes for free, while non-residents can participate for just $3 per session—a small price for the chance to improve both physical and mental well-being.
One of the standout features of the Pittsford program is the variety it offers. Whether a senior is looking for a low-impact session to ease arthritis pain or wants to dance their way to better health, there’s something for everyone on the weekly calendar.
Seniors Yoga is offered every Monday and Friday morning, helping participants gently build flexibility, strength, and inner calm. For something with a bit more rhythm and creative flair, the Nia: Mind-Body-Spirit Fitness class runs on Mondays during the summer and blends elements of dance, martial arts, and healing arts.
Those living with arthritis—or simply seeking a gentler routine—can join the Arthritis Senior Fitness class, which runs twice a week and allows for seated or standing participation.
Balance training, a critical aspect of senior fitness, is also a focal point. The department offers two different options: a virtual Balance Class on Mondays, available via Zoom, and an in-person Balance Class on Tuesdays. Both aim to increase coordination, build strength, and reduce the risk of falls.

For seniors interested in spicing things up with music and movement, Zumba Gold provides Latin-inspired dance workouts twice a week, modified for older adults or beginners. Line Dancing and Square Dancing offer both physical activity and social interaction, making exercise feel more like a party than a workout.
Beyond the more mainstream fitness options, Pittsford Recreation also features specialty classes like the Feldenkrais Method, which is held on the first two Wednesdays of each month. This lesser-known but highly effective approach focuses on posture, flexibility, and reducing stress through small, mindful movements.
Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention is another gem in the program. Available twice a week, this class uses slow, flowing movements based on the SUN style of Tai Chi. It’s particularly well-suited to seniors of all ability levels and is backed by scientific studies for its benefits in improving balance and joint health.
For those seeking a comprehensive wellness experience, the “Get Fit and Stress Less” class combines cardiovascular workouts with strategies for managing stress—an important component of senior health that often goes overlooked.
Starting a new fitness routine can be intimidating, especially for seniors who haven’t exercised regularly in the past. But Pittsford Recreation is determined to make it easier for everyone to get started.
“Beginning a comprehensive exercise program can be overwhelming!” the department admits. But by offering so many choices and encouraging a mix of activities, seniors can create their own weekly plan. They can, for instance, start the week with yoga, add some cardio with Zumba midweek, and finish with strength training or dancing on Friday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that older adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, such as walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, such as jogging. They also recommend at least two days of strength training and frequent balance exercises. Pittsford’s program hits all of those marks—plus, it adds the bonus of community connection.
The only real requirement before joining is a call to the doctor. “IMPORTANT: Before starting any new exercise program, consult with your doctor, who can advise you on the best type of program based on your physical abilities,” the department reminds.
All classes—except the virtual Monday Balance Class—are held at the Pittsford Community Center, located at 35 Lincoln Avenue. Pre-registration is required for all in-person sessions. Seniors and caregivers can call the Senior Programs Office at 248-6235 to sign up or get additional information.
The latest Pittsford Recreation brochure, which was recently mailed to residents, also provides full details on each offering. Those who missed it can access the information online or stop by the Community Center.
