Mohawk, New York – A motorcycle crash on the New York State Thruway in the town of Mohawk brought emergency responders to the scene late Friday morning, according to State Police.

The incident occurred on June 6, 2025, at approximately 10:35 a.m., near milepost marker 220.4 on Interstate 90. Troopers responded after reports of a single-vehicle motorcycle accident involving a 2023 Harley Davidson.

Police say the rider, 64-year-old Brian A. Kelsey from Arkport, NY, was traveling eastbound when the crash happened. According to the initial investigation, Kelsey was trying to merge into the right lane due to a construction-related closure in the left lane. As he maneuvered into the open lane, he struck a traffic cone, causing the motorcycle to veer out of control.

Authorities say the impact with the cone led Kelsey to lose control of the bike. The motorcycle reportedly overturned and slid for nearly 500 feet along the roadway. During the slide, Kelsey was thrown from the motorcycle.

Emergency medical personnel arrived quickly and treated Kelsey at the scene for what were described as minor injuries. He was then transported by ambulance to Wynn Hospital for further evaluation. Thankfully, no other vehicles were involved, and no major injuries were reported.

No tickets were issued in connection with the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, though law enforcement does not believe any criminal or reckless behavior played a role.

State Police remind all drivers to use extra caution when approaching construction zones, especially when lane closures are in effect. The combination of narrowed lanes, reduced visibility, and shifting traffic patterns can increase the risk of accidents, particularly for motorcycle operators.

“Drive alert and be aware of your surroundings. Even a small obstacle like a cone can have serious consequences for a motorcyclist,” a trooper on the scene noted.

As summer travel increases and road work becomes more frequent, officials urge drivers to slow down and stay attentive in construction areas.
