Wilson Magnet High School hosts union career fair to help seniors connect with skilled trade opportunities

Rochester, New York – Graduating seniors at Joseph C. Wilson Magnet High School Commencement Academy had the chance to step into their futures early during the school’s Union Career Fair, held Friday, June 6. The event was more than just a showcase of jobs—it was a clear message to students that real opportunities are out there, and they’re within reach.
Organized as part of the school’s effort to connect students with meaningful employment, the career fair brought together a wide range of trade unions, training centers, and public service organizations. From Iron Workers Local Union 33 to UA Local 13 Plumbers and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the event offered students a firsthand look into professions that build the community—and offer solid wages, training, and career paths.
“This wasn’t just about handing out flyers,” said Barry Burke, a Special Education teacher at Wilson and one of the key organizers. “These unions have told us they need good employees. They have members retiring, and billions of dollars of work is coming into the Greater Rochester area in the next five years, and they need people to fill those positions.”
Students who attended the event had the opportunity to explore different skilled trades, learn how to apply for apprenticeships, and in some cases, even schedule interviews. The chance to speak one-on-one with union representatives gave students real insight into what it takes to get started—and what they can expect on the job.
In the final hour of the day, the focus shifted exclusively to seniors. That dedicated time gave them the space to ask serious, job-ready questions. It wasn’t just about curiosity—it was about making connections and taking action.
“I want them graduating on a Monday night and being in someone’s office the next morning, filling out the appropriate paperwork to get to work,” Burke said.
For many of the students, this event marked the first time they had considered a future in the trades. With rising interest in vocational paths and a growing need for skilled labor, the timing couldn’t be better. As college costs continue to climb, many young people are seeking alternatives that offer stability, benefits, and room for growth—and the trades deliver on all three.
By organizing events like Union Career Day, Wilson Magnet High School is doing more than preparing students for graduation. It’s helping them move forward with purpose. With direct access to professionals and real employment pathways, students are stepping confidently into the world, ready to begin careers that matter.
The success of this event may just be the beginning, as schools and unions alike recognize the power of partnership in preparing the next generation of workers. For the seniors at Wilson, the future doesn’t just look possible—it looks promising.
