Town of Penfield announces winners of the 2025 Memorial Day essay contest for middle school students

Penfield, Florida – The winners of the 2025 Town of Penfield Memorial Day Essay Contest have been revealed, and the top honors this year go to three thoughtful and passionate middle school students whose writing stood out among dozens of submissions.
Taking first place is Briella Peck, an 8th-grade student whose essay earned praise for its depth and clarity. In second place is Natalie Mihaly, a 7th grader who impressed the judges with her insight and strong connection to this year’s theme. Rounding out the top three is Emma Mattox, a 6th-grade student whose perspective brought a fresh and meaningful voice to the competition.
The annual contest is a collaborative effort between the Town of Penfield and the American Legion Braman Post 1229. Open to students in grades 6 through 8 who either attend Penfield schools or live in the town, the program encourages young people to think critically about the meaning of Memorial Day and America’s core values.
This year’s essay question posed a powerful challenge: Is America today our forefather’s vision? Students were invited to explore how the nation has changed over time, what ideals the founders believed in, and whether those principles are still visible in modern America.
“Congratulations to the 2025 Town of Penfield Memorial Day Essay Contest winners,” the town announced, applauding the efforts of all participants.
Through their essays, students reflected on topics such as freedom, unity, equality, and sacrifice. Many connected the past to the present by examining how American values are lived out today—especially in times of challenge and division. The contest not only offered an opportunity for academic writing, but also provided a moment for young people to express gratitude to those who have served the country and to think deeply about their role as future citizens.
The winners were recognized during Penfield’s Memorial Day events, and their essays are expected to be shared with the community, serving as a reminder of the importance of reflection, remembrance, and civic engagement.
Programs like this continue to highlight the value of youth involvement in civic dialogue and help strengthen the connection between generations.
