State Police launch full investigation after trooper and civilian injured in two-vehicle crash in Herkimer

Herkimer, New York – A late morning crash on May 2 brought emergency crews to the scene of a two-vehicle accident involving a New York State Trooper on State Route 5 in the Town of Herkimer. According to the New York State Police, the incident occurred around 11:17 a.m. near the intersection of Eatonville Road.
The crash involved a marked State Police vehicle and a passenger car. Both the trooper and the civilian driver were injured in the collision, but officials confirmed that their injuries were not life-threatening. “A State Trooper and the driver of the passenger car were both transported to Wynn Hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” authorities stated.
Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted as law enforcement responded to the crash and medical personnel treated those involved. Several emergency vehicles were seen near the scene as investigators began gathering evidence.
The circumstances leading up to the collision are still unclear, and officials have not released any details regarding potential contributing factors such as speed, visibility, or right-of-way. Investigators from the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit have taken over the case to determine what happened. “The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit,” police confirmed.
While no further information about the identities of those involved has been made public, the State Police indicated that updates would be provided once the investigation moves forward. Authorities are also reminding drivers to remain cautious when traveling through active scenes or areas with law enforcement activity.
Incidents like this, especially when they involve law enforcement personnel, often lead to a thorough review to ensure protocol was followed and safety was maintained on both sides. In the meantime, both the trooper and the other driver are recovering, and officials are focused on understanding the sequence of events that led to the crash.
As of now, no charges or citations have been reported. More information is expected as the investigation continues.
