Roc City Players bring an unforgettable student-led performance of the wiz to the stage this weekend

Rochester, New York – This weekend, students from 13 Rochester City School District (RCSD) schools are stepping into the spotlight to perform The Wiz in a production that is entirely student-driven. From acting and singing to handling lighting, sound, and set design, these young talents are proving that they can do it all.
Bringing this beloved musical to life is no small feat, but these dedicated students in grades 7 through 12 have taken on the challenge with enthusiasm. The production is a true showcase of student creativity, with every aspect of the show run by the performers themselves.
Adding to the excitement, this year’s production features a groundbreaking element for the district—a live pit band composed of both RCSD staff and student musicians. This marks the first time an RCSD band will accompany a student production in this way, creating an even more immersive and dynamic experience for audiences.

Founded in 2017, ROC City Players has grown into RCSD’s premier student theatre group. It was co-founded by former RCSD Director of Arts Dominic Pickard, District Musical Director Taylor Johnson, and Eric Williamson. Today, Johnson, who teaches music at John James Audubon School No. 33, and Williamson, a music teacher at The Children’s School of Rochester School No. 15, continue to lead and inspire young performers in the program.
The production of The Wiz is not just about putting on a great show—it’s about empowering students, fostering teamwork, and developing skills that go far beyond the stage. The dedication and passion of these students, combined with the support of their teachers and mentors, make this performance a must-see event for the community.
With months of hard work behind them, the cast and crew are ready to take the audience on an unforgettable journey down the Yellow Brick Road. For those lucky enough to get a seat, The Wiz promises to be a spectacular display of talent, creativity, and student leadership.
