State Police investigate fatal I-890 crash in Schenectady that claimed the life of 29-year-old driver after vehicle left roadway
Schenectady,New York – New York State Police are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday morning on Interstate 890 in the city of Schenectady.
The crash happened on August 4, 2026, at approximately 6:20 a.m., when troopers responded to a report of a vehicle that had left the roadway on I-890 westbound near the Exit 6 off-ramp.
According to the preliminary investigation, Miguel Alejandro Mendoza Canarte, 29, of Shandaken, New York, was driving a 2022 Nissan Altima westbound on the highway when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway. Investigators said the reason the vehicle departed the travel lane remains unknown.
After leaving the roadway, the Nissan struck an earth embankment before hitting a support pole for an overhead highway sign. The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle and left Canarte seriously injured.
Canarte was the only person inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Emergency responders transported him to Ellis Hospital for medical treatment, but he was later pronounced deceased.
State Police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash as part of their investigation. Officials have not released additional details about what may have caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
The incident temporarily drew emergency crews to the area as investigators worked at the scene. Drivers traveling through the area were urged to use caution while authorities responded and conducted their initial investigation.
State Police said the investigation remains active, and further information may be released as additional details become available.
Authorities are continuing to review all available evidence, including the condition of the vehicle and the circumstances leading up to the crash, in an effort to determine what happened before the collision.
