Monroe County launches community survey to support nonstop flights between Rochester and San Juan
Rochester, New York – Monroe County officials are asking residents to help demonstrate the demand for a nonstop flight between Rochester and San Juan by taking part in a new community survey. The initiative is intended to strengthen efforts to bring direct air service between the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in Puerto Rico.
Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced the launch of the survey alongside members of the Monroe County Legislature and local community leaders. Officials hope the responses will provide airlines with additional evidence that travelers in the Rochester region would support a nonstop connection to Puerto Rico.
The survey was organized by Monroe County Executive Bello and the ROC Airport after Monroe County Legislature President Yversha Roman, Monroe County Legislator Ricky Frazier and members of the area’s Latino community urged local leaders to pursue direct service. Supporters believe a nonstop route would better serve thousands of residents while creating new opportunities for tourism, business travel and family visits.
“Monroe County boasts the largest Puerto Rican community in New York State outside of New York City, establishing a natural link between Rochester and San Juan,” said County Executive Bello. “Puerto Rico is the top Caribbean destination from ROC. This survey will supply additional support for Airport in its effort to secure an airline to offer this essential air service. Let’s show the airlines that we can, and will, support nonstop service to beautiful San Juan.”
County leaders say the survey is an important step in demonstrating that enough passengers would use the route on a regular basis. Airlines often consider local demand when evaluating whether to launch new nonstop destinations, making public participation a valuable part of the process.
Legislature President Yversha Roman encouraged residents from across Monroe County to complete the questionnaire, regardless of whether they travel frequently or only occasionally. Officials say every response helps build a clearer picture of potential demand.
“Whether you might be interested in traveling for business, to visit family or for a fabulous Caribbean vacation, it’s important for the entire community to participate in this survey,” said Monroe County Legislature President Yversha Roman. “The survey is straightforward and will only take a few minutes to complete, and could provide the incentive an air carrier needs to locate a nonstop flight to San Juan here at our airport.”
The survey is available in both English and Spanish through the ROC Airport’s website. In addition to the online version, organizers plan to bring the survey directly into the community by attending several upcoming events where residents can learn more about the proposal and participate.
Survey information will be shared during the Latino Music event at Concerts by the Shore on July 15, the Latino Music event at Bands on the Bricks at the Public Market on July 17, and throughout the Puerto Rican Festival, which runs from July 30 through August 1. Officials hope these gatherings will help reach a broad cross-section of residents who may benefit from direct service.
Advocates say a nonstop flight would offer more than convenience. They believe it could strengthen economic ties, increase tourism, and improve travel options for families with connections to Puerto Rico. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, travelers do not need a passport or customs processing when flying there from the mainland United States.
“A nonstop route to San Juan benefits the local economy and serves as an ideal gateway to the Caribbean,” said Monroe County Legislator Ricky Frazier. No passport required, no customs hassle, just a straightforward flight to worldclass beaches and a city full of culture, fantastic dining, and many water and outdoor activities.”
While the survey itself does not guarantee that an airline will introduce the route, Monroe County leaders believe it will provide valuable information as airport officials continue discussions with carriers. They are encouraging anyone interested in improved travel options between Rochester and Puerto Rico to take a few minutes to complete the survey and help demonstrate community support for the proposed nonstop service.
