Syracuse, New York – Thousands of visitors are expected to head to Syracuse next week for the 2026 Syracuse Nationals, and law enforcement agencies across the area are preparing for the surge in traffic and large crowds that come with one of the region’s biggest automotive events.

The Syracuse Nationals will take place from Thursday, July 16, through Saturday, July 18, at the New York State Fairgrounds. To help keep roadways safe throughout the three-day event, the New York State Police will work alongside the Syracuse Police Department, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, the DeWitt Police Department, and the Cicero Police Department in a coordinated public safety operation.

Officials said drivers should expect an increased law enforcement presence not only around the fairgrounds but also along major highways, local streets, and neighboring communities where traffic is expected to be much heavier than usual. The agencies will focus on reducing dangerous driving behaviors while helping traffic move as efficiently as possible during the busy weekend.

Authorities emphasized that all New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws will remain fully in effect throughout the event. Drivers attending the Syracuse Nationals, as well as those simply passing through the area, are expected to follow the same traffic laws that apply every day.

Officers will pay close attention to a range of traffic violations, including speeding, aggressive driving, reckless driving, and exhibition driving. Enforcement efforts will also target unsafe lane changes, following other vehicles too closely, distracted driving, seat belt violations, impaired driving involving alcohol or drugs, illegal vehicle equipment or modifications, and issues involving parking and pedestrian safety.

Officials warned that reckless driving and other serious vehicle-related offenses could lead to significant enforcement action. Depending on the circumstances, vehicles involved in dangerous or criminal activity may be towed and, when appropriate, held as evidence during a criminal or traffic investigation. Vehicles found to be unsafe or otherwise not legally permitted to operate on public roads may also be removed and subject to additional enforcement measures.

Because the Syracuse Nationals attracts thousands of spectators and vehicle enthusiasts each year, motorists are encouraged to prepare for delays and heavier traffic throughout the surrounding area. Law enforcement agencies recommend allowing extra travel time, following traffic signals and directions from officers, and remaining patient while traveling through areas with increased congestion.

The reminder also extends to owners of classic cars, collector vehicles, modified automobiles, and other specialty vehicles participating in the event. Officials noted that taking part in the Syracuse Nationals does not provide an exception to state traffic laws or vehicle regulations. Every driver and vehicle must continue to meet all applicable legal requirements while operating on public roadways.

Residents and visitors are also encouraged to stay alert throughout the weekend and report emergencies or suspicious activity by calling 911. Authorities said public cooperation plays an important role in helping keep the event safe for everyone involved.

With thousands of people expected to gather at the New York State Fairgrounds over the three-day celebration, law enforcement agencies say their shared objective is straightforward: maintaining public safety while allowing attendees, local residents, and travelers to enjoy the Syracuse Nationals with as few disruptions as possible. Through coordinated enforcement, traffic management, and public awareness, officials hope to create a safe environment both on the roads and throughout the surrounding communities during one of Central New York’s most popular annual events.
