County Executive Adam Bello invites Monroe County residents to help shape future walking and biking projects through new active transportation plan
Monroe County, New York – Monroe County residents will have an opportunity this summer to help shape the future of walking, biking, and mobility improvements throughout the county as officials begin gathering public feedback for the 2026 Countywide Active Transportation Implementation Plan.
Monroe County Executive Adam Bello recently announced opportunities for residents to participate in the planning process, which is being led by the Monroe County Departments of Transportation and Planning & Development in partnership with the Genesee Transportation Council.
The county is encouraging community members to share their opinions through a public open house scheduled for Thursday, July 16, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at SUNY Empire, located at 680 Westfall Road. Residents who are unable to attend the event can also provide feedback through an online survey available at https://publicinput.com/mcatip.
The new plan builds on recommendations from the 2023 Countywide Active Transportation Plan but will focus more specifically on identifying practical projects that can be completed along roads owned by Monroe County. Officials said the goal is to create improvements that make transportation safer, more accessible, and better connected for people who walk, ride bicycles, or use mobility devices.
County Executive Adam Bello said community involvement will play an important role in deciding which projects receive attention and future investment.
“Creating safer and more accessible transportation options is an important part of building a healthier, more connected Monroe County,” said County Executive Bello. ” This plan supports our Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries while making it easier and safer for residents of all ages and abilities to walk, bike, and access destinations throughout our county. Community input will help identify priorities and guide investments that improve safety and connectivity.”
As part of the planning process, officials will spend the next year reviewing current transportation conditions, studying the needs of county facilities and major travel corridors, and identifying areas where improvements could have the greatest impact.
The project team will also create a prioritized list of recommended projects divided into short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals. These recommendations could later be incorporated into future capital improvement plans and regular maintenance programs throughout Monroe County.
The county’s active transportation efforts are designed to support safer travel options for residents of different ages and abilities. By improving connections between neighborhoods, public spaces, and important destinations, officials hope the plan will encourage more people to choose walking, biking, and other forms of active transportation.
Residents are encouraged to participate and share their experiences, concerns, and ideas about current transportation conditions. Public feedback collected during this stage will help guide decisions about where safety upgrades and connectivity improvements are most needed.
The online survey will remain open through Aug. 21, 2026, or until further notice, giving residents several weeks to submit their comments and contribute to the development of the countywide plan.
