Driver seriously injured in one-car crash in Shawangunk
Shawangunk, New York – New York State Police are continuing to investigate a serious one-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday morning in the town of Shawangunk, leaving a New Jersey man with significant injuries.
According to investigators, troopers were dispatched to Albany Post Road at approximately 7:55 a.m. on July 1 after receiving reports of a single-vehicle collision.
A preliminary investigation found that a white Chevrolet Colorado was traveling north on Albany Post Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve near the intersection of Old Galeville Road. The pickup left the roadway before striking a guide rail and then crashing into a tree.
Investigators determined that the force of the collision caused the driver, identified as 46-year-old Robert J. Challener of Dumont, New Jersey, to be ejected through the vehicle’s windshield. After the impact, the truck came to rest on the northbound shoulder, facing south.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and found Challener with serious injuries. Authorities said he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Due to the severity of his condition, he was transported by medical helicopter to Westchester Medical Center for treatment.
State Police said the investigation into the crash remains active as troopers continue working to determine all of the circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the roadway. No additional vehicles were involved in the incident.
Following the preliminary investigation, Challener was issued multiple tickets for violations of New York’s Vehicle and Traffic Law. He is scheduled to appear in Shawangunk Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.

The crash serves as another reminder of the dangers that can arise when drivers lose control on curved sections of roadway. Authorities also emphasized the importance of wearing seatbelts, noting that restraints significantly reduce the risk of severe injury or ejection during a collision.
State Police have not released any additional information as the investigation continues. Further updates are expected if new details become available.
